Creation of the Birds / Creación de las Aves (1957) by Remedios Varo (1908 - 1963) Painting of an owl woman creating birds. She’s sitting at a desk. There’s an ant-like machine on her right, distributing drops of blue, yellow and red paint onto her mixing plate. A beam of starlight is shone on the paper with a prism she is holding in her left hand. She wears a tiny violin like a pendant around her neck and a thread comes out of it, into the brush she’s using to create the birds. The combination of the paint and light creates a living bird, flying out of the canvas.
