#StillDoinCDs Jakko M. Jakszyk was the son of an Irish singer & unknown father, adopted early by a Polish couple in London. A career as an esteemed rock guitarist & songwriter didn’t sate an urge to find his bio-dad. “Son of Glen” (2025) is a musically fluent reveal of a never-met US airman.

A man (50s) and a woman (30s) dressed mainly in black (but the woman wears a patterned deep crimson top and has a pale blond bang in her long dyed-black hair) sit on a red divan with a purple throw pillow between them. This scene is set in a narrow room alcove filled with religious objects, mainly crucifixes, and family photos, along with some miscellaneous artworks and glass display casings.

#StillDoinCDs Elham (Matin Elham on streaming sites) is an expat Persian singer recording out of the Iranian émigré stronghold (one hopes) of Reseda, California. 2003’s Hanouzam Dir Nashodeh (Never Too Late) starts with synth-pop, moves on to more trad pop & ends with Amr Diab banger Nour el Ain.

A 30-something Iranian guy is seen in half-turned profile in a black shirt so just his head & neck glow in the incident light.

#StillDoinCDs “Dark Side of the Moon,” something of a concept album about being driven mad by modern times, was a 1973 Pink Floyd epic that is the 3d biggest seller of all time. It’s also a personal favourite of mine ever since I heard bits as house music at an Applejack (early Trooper) concert.

Against a dark field, a beam of light enters a prism and breaks up into a rainbow.

#StillDoinCDs Jeff Beck’s 1972 4th album under his own name & last with “Jeff Beck Group” was most popular in Canada, reaching #15. It featured 5 covers incl. the definitive version of southern rocker Don Nix’s “Going Down.” Gold record despite critics’ negativities at the time.

Rows of small upright rectangular photographs make up the cover. The top row consists of four blank panels and a central photo of an orange. The remaining four rows consist of black-and-white head shots of band members, repeated in the same order in each row, slightly tinted in different background colour shades.

#StillDoinCDs Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, “Gurrumul” to friends (thus title of his 1st solo album, 2008), was a platinum-selling, multi ARIA winning Australian singer-songwriter from the Yolngu peoples of Elcho Island, Northern Territory. His singing is regarded as transcendently beautiful.

Portrait (close-up head shot) of a 30-something blind Yolngu Australian songwriter. He seems to be wearing a plain white teeshirt.

#StillDoinCDs Hawai’i and its Caribbean immigrants evolved an effervescent form of reggae, sometimes called Jawaiian, featured in this 2002 collection “Island Roots 3.” Even indigenous protest song “Couldn’t Take the Mana” is upbeat. Swedish/Jawaiian “We Are Only Human” is classic.

The cover shows Honolulu’s Aloha Clock Tower with a faded Hawai’ian flag (eight stripes of red, white & blue with a British Union Jack in the canton) as a background skyscape. Palm fronds drape in the foreground. Song titles letter the irregular red border. 1	D-Ru–	Good Lovin' (Brown Sugar Girl)

3	Ekolu–	Just One Night
4	Ho'omau–	Daydream
5	Mana Kaleilani Caceres–	Couldn't Take The Mana

#StillDoinCDs The Stranglers, starting as a keyboard-heavy punk band in Guildford, Surrey, England, went through several musical phases. Though this “Collection” (1998) on the Dutch label Disky starts with their sophisto 1982 hit, Golden Brown, it mostly has punky live tracks from 1977.

Four glowering to neutral young male band members lurk on a rococo couch in a room with gray marbled wallpaper.

#StillDoinCDs Holly Clausius from Toronto bills herself as a “queer artist blazing a trail of her own,” but her brand of lightly alternativized youthful soul-pop is like a brilliant dragonfly zigzagging over the mainstream. “Thinkin’ About You” from 2nd album “Petal Pusher” (2025) is hit stuff.

A young woman is seen in a front-on portrait shot with feather-like designs painted around her eyes and with a rose in her mouth. She also wears complex beaded earrings that may be indigenous art, and has warm auburn hair. The cover plays on a Miley Cyrus cover for the album “Bass Persuades,” which in turn may owe its flower-over-mouth theme to Kate Bush’s “The Sensual World,” though Kate didn’t have the flower IN her mouth.

#StillDoinCDs Ellen McIlwaine was a famous exponent of blues slide guitar. Born in Nashville, raised in Japan, but immigrating to Canada in 1987, she became a Calgarian. Her 10th & last studio album, “Mystic Bridge” (2006), with tabla guru Cassius Khan, was a sumptuous fusion.

Cover shows a covered footbridge with tiled roof, as seen in Japan, crossing a large creek in a hilly pine forest.

#StillDoinCDs Spinvis (Erik de Jong), from Spijkenisse, NL, waited til he was 40 to bring his attic-made 1st demo to a label, where he was signed & rose to alt electro folk rock cult star. “Be-bop-a-lula” (2023) is album 7, with fluent tunes & witty Dutch lyrics - genius really.

Cover mimics famous Edvard Munch painting “The Scream,” but featuring a yellowish figure with either curly hair or exposed brain running along a green lane between two rows of yellow, Amsterdam-style 2-story, gabled buildings. Rays emanate from his head as his steamy breath bears the text, “Als je maanlicht braakt,” “if you vomit moonlight.” This is a text from the album’s most popular song, Paradijs, meaning Paradise.

#StillDoinCDs Rough & Ready, 1971, was the 3d solo group album of eminent rock guitarist Jeff Beck (from the London area) after hitmakers The Yardbirds broke up. Unusually for him, he wrote most of the rather complex, jazz-influenced but definitely rock-oriented tracks himself. Highly influential.

Cover shows portraits of 5 young-ish (30s?) male band members.

#StillDoinCDs American Woman was a rocket of a #1 album (Canada; #9 US) with a #1 title track (both countries) that moved the Guess Who from pop stars to rock stars in 1970. “No Time” was a 2nd #1 (Canada) track that was my Canadian rock gateway drug in Grade 8. Chills forever!

Four young (20s), long-haired rock band members cluster in a photo superimposed on a large image of a red-headed woman’s face. The woman has hair pulled back severely and her face is bluish in silhouette. The ruffles on drummer Garry Peterson’s leather jacket blend into the silhouette making it look as if the woman has fangs. One of her eyes stares at you past the band huddle.

#StillDoinCDs Matt Steady is a top indie musician I support with advance purchase of new projects, & I’m delighted with “Velvet & Gold,” a collection of often Celtic-inflected rock done with multi-instrumentalist & vocalist Sally Minnear. Yes, daughter of Kerry Minnear, ex prog band Gentle Giant.

A young middle aged man with a violin and a younger woman with a star-shaped tambourine face each other while playing music in a deciduous forest. Signature of Matt Steady superimposed.

#StillDoinCDs Sons of one of the first-recorded “Senior Dagar Brothers,” Ustad Zahiruddin & Faiyazuddin Dagar, as the “Junior” Dagar Brothers, brought the family tradition of 2-singer, meditative dhrupad music through the mid 20th cent. Their Rag Miyan Ki Malhar (2000), is pure rainy-day bliss.

Cover shows a black & white image of two sixty-something Indian singers singing together into the same microphone. The image is framed in two concentric layers of fancy gold frames and forest-green matting.

#StillDoinCDs Glen Miller, currently rebranded Glen Alan, put together a band called Elemental for “Finding the Way,” a 2008 CD featuring his deep baritone on self-penned pop tunes & some lively Jobim & Weill covers. He now runs Mint Music school & studio in Toronto.

The cover frames an impressionist painted image of a sunlit low mountain behind a boreal lake with broadly striped bare rock hillocks and small, wind-bent spruce trees on the foreshore. A ray of sunlight illuminates the yellow grass on the mountain’s saddle as well as the choppy waves on the blue lake. The sky towers with heavy grey clouds and grey streaks of localized falling rain. This painting is “Lake Wabagishik” by Franklin Carmichael, 1928.

#StillDoinCDs Coming from the era where rockers’ drive for respect led to complicated progressive rock, Atom Heart Mother from London’s Pink Floyd was a prime (#1) success, with its 24-min. title track scored and enhanced by experimental composer Ron Geesin. Cover by art collective Hipgnosis.

A Holstein (black and white patches type dairy) cow stands on a field, turned away from the viewer but looking around to gaze at sem. Inside cover shows 3 Holstein cattle looking at the camera, while, on the other side of the inner CD folder, one cow stands with the album’s title displayed across the grass behind it.

#StillDoinCDs Openly gay rocker Bob Mould is now, with 2025’s ‘Here We Go Crazy,’ at 15 solo albums; this CD came from a trip I made to Edinburgh, so his sturdy post-punk single-guitar wall of sound (there’s also a good band in there), graffitied with tune-rich introspections, is getting around.

A landscape that shows a nearly dark desert scene in the faint glow of sunset (rise?) behind some distant mountains is ripped as if made of paper, and an irregularly triangular shaped tearaway zone shows a bright daylight version of the same scene, possibly interconnected , where a silhouetted male figure with an electric guitar in hand appears beneath blue sky with the high cumulus clouds of a nice day.

#StillDoinCDs The Franklin Electric is a Montréal-based, mostly anglophone indie folk rock band with 6 albums so far, of which 2013’s “This is How I Let You Down” is the 1st. The rockin’-smooth & highly melodic songs often have horn arrangements, producing a unique sound.

The cover shows an artwork with a ring-shaped flock of birds, many of them falcons and other small raptors, depicted in detail but somewhat fantastical, flying in front of a tropical forest featuring cycads with upright fronds and other exotic plants. Micah Lidberg is the credited artist.
