More photos from #StGeorgesHall in #Liverpool. #altText added as best I could describe it!

One of several doorways into St George’s Hall…. The doors are double doors with a fanlight panel stretched over the top of them between large stone posts. Dark wood is covered with shining bronze decoration including a liver bird in the fanlight panel, portraits in the centre of the main doors and the letter ‘SPQL’ (Senate & Population of Liverpool) as derived from a common Roman abbreviation, SPQR. There are two fish depicted at the bottom of each door. St George’s Hall in Liverpool had had its usual wooden flooring removed from the central body of the hall, for 6 weeks over summer 2026. The Minton tiles underneath are visible and the hall was opened to this we who wished to see this. The photo here is taken from the grey stone steps at one end of the hall, facing down the length of the hall, towards the organ loft on its raised platform above marble pillars. Above and behind the brown/black/gold organ pipes is a large semi-circular stained-glass window with Neptune holding a trident representing the sea, and his son Triton blowing a seashell horn depicted alongside two representations of the Liver bird of Liverpool. The ceiling of the hall is arched and has decorative panels in square or rectangular shapes. There are a number of lit chandeliers visible, hanging over the walkways edging the hall, and to the left, there is a raised walkway in front of arched windows. Intricate circular tiled display showing bands of patterns in yellow, dark-red, white, dark-blue, white and with a central dark-blue circle, showing a picture of a single green fish with yellow fins. The outermost ring is wider, in dark-red tiles with yellow & white circles placed next to each other with a dark-blue background and a yellow open flower motif in each centre.

Went to see the amazing #Minton #tiled floor of #StGeorgesHall in #Liverpool on 1st Sept, before they covered it again with the wooden flooring. Quite staggering hall, have never been to a concert there before, & the #pipeOrgan is also quite something!!
Photos my own, with #altText to describe.

Circular space in the hall under the stone organ platform is decorated with a circular design floor in the style of Roman mosaics but set using Minton tiling. Circular bands surround a representation of the Prince of Wales feathers on a central blue circular background. One of two matching stone statues of Roman god Hercules, either side of the Willis organ platform supporting pillars, so close to life-size. These are known architecturally as ‘telamons’ (male sculpted supports, weight-bearing). Hercules is bare-chested, but shown wearing the hide of the slain Nemean lion, the first of his famous ‘12 Labours’, so the lion’s mouth is perched on top of his head with the mouth appearing to be eating the crown of the head, the lion’s pelt mostly covers Hercules’ unseen back, and two of the lion’s legs are tied in a knot around Hercules’ waist and groin area with paws depicting hanging down. The mighty 1855 Willis pipe organ in St George’s Hall, Liverpool, with organ loft balcony raised on a stone platform and keyboard console visible from the hall. The pipes are black with gold decoration and are arranged in size groups, with the largest flanking each side of a grouping under an arched architectural shape. These are perhaps a ‘regular house storey’ tall or more. There is a bust sculpture of its first City organist, William Thomas Best, in white marble placed centrally on the organ loft railing, facing into the hall. Above the pipes and behind them is a semi-circular stained glass window in blues and greens and white depicting Neptune (Roman god of the sea) standing on the left with a trident, the famous Liver bird both on top of and within a white central circle, and Neptune’s son, Triton, on the right blowing a large seashell horn. The city’s motto is in white lettering on a red ribbon banner. One of many designs set into the stone flooring using Minton tiles. This is a circular design outlined with a red and yellow border, and with a dark-blue central background showing a white shield and white ribbon, standing above two yellow/golden feathers and with thin green leaves sprouting upwards. The shield shows a standing cormorant-type bird, the Liver Bird, in grey tones, holding a strand of green seaweed in its beak. Above the shield, in the dark-blue, there is also a dark-grey depiction of the liver bird as a statue on a small plinth. In the ribbon, the words of Liverpool’s motto are defined in dark blue lettering: “Deus Nobis Haec Otia Fecit” (God hath granted us this ease)
