A final flash, and somebody stepped through the portal. Or, something. The creature scuttled onto the platform with its four legs splayed out like a lizard, though it had vibrant rainbow feathers rather than scales. It stared past London as if unable to see her. “Welcome, child of the universe,” said a deep voice behind London. “How have you found yourself in the Temple of Travel?” “Um,” the small creature said, blinking buggy eyes in awe, “I’m not… I don’t really know where…” “Fret not, little one. Many arrive at the temple unsure of how they arrived, or where to go next. Allow me to assist you.”

Her eyes opened, round and intense. She stared unblinking, waiting for London to take the first bite. London spooned a disc of sausage onto the tray for Myrtle, who devoured the meat. Steam warmed London’s face as she brought a spoon of broth to her pursed lips and slurped. Flavour exploded on her tongue. It tasted like home and family, like a warm hug and a whispered promise that everything would be okay. She decided to heck with spoons and drank straight from the bowl. Warm broth filled her belly. Her cheeks puffed out like a hamster’s as she chewed on a mouthful of sausage, crawfish, peppers, and rice. “More,” Myrtle said, and London gave her a piece of crawfish. “Good, eh?” Delilah smiled, her eyes crinkled once more. “I’ll be sure to let Gram-Grams know you liked it at the next seance. So, to business then.”

Courtney had been London’s one and only best friend since the creation of the Sun—that is, the papier-mâché Sun London made in grade two, which Courtney promptly stepped on in search of her fallen eyewear. Courtney was the new girl that year, her family having just moved to Canada from Taiwan. London knew what moving to a new place was like. London immediately apologized for her Sun being in Courtney’s path, and Courtney apologized for destroying a vital celestial body, and they continued apologizing until deciding to make it up to one another over a shared juice box and animal crackers. Rising rent prices forced Courtney’s family to move to the other side of town last year, but she and London wouldn’t let public transportation get in the way of their friendship. Four video calls a week were mandatory to replace lost visitation time; they put the clause in their long-distance-friendship contract, safely tucked away at the back of London’s shirt drawer. Courtney, as her legally binding best friend forever, looked at London with worry lines creasing her forehead. “Are you sure you [want] to do anything tonight?”

They entered the Mantraps. The tall grass blocked out most of the burnt orange sky, leaving London shadowed beneath a strip of twilight. London thought she could hear the Mantraps breathe. The flowers stirred in their apparent sleep, smacking petals like lips, rustling among the tall blades of grass. She wished she were in a cornfield instead. Or a soybean field. There were so many types of edible field, but London’s rotten luck had brought her to the only field where she was edible.

Confused—both at the question itself and that this was the first time Necrolas had asked a question that wasn’t entirely about himself—London turned her bag around. “They’re not kingdoms. This one,” she said, pointing to the iron-on pink, purple, and blue patch, “is the bisexual flag. And this one”—she pointed to the light blue, pink, and white flag—“is the transgender flag.” “What are those if not kingdoms?” “They’re identities—ways you feel, or parts of who you are. Being bisexual is when you like more than one gender. Um, romantically. And being transgender is when you’re a different gender than your doctor or your mom thought you were when you were born.” “Do you feel these ways, then?” “I’m bi,” London said. “I’ve had lots of crushes and it doesn’t really matter to me what genders they are. But I’m not trans. I wear that one to support my best friend. And all other trans people, too. Some adults are pretty weird about this stuff in my world.” “Interesting. My kingdom did think I was a princess for my first several birthdays, before I could tell them otherwise. We have no term for this. It is not unusual.”
