Sentinel and shelter. 🌾🐦❄️

One sparrow keeping sharp watch from the high twig, while the rest settle into the soft winter blur below. A study in optical depth for #BirdOfTheDay and #BokehBirds.

A close-up winter bird photograph featuring house sparrows perched among bare, thorny brambles with a shallow depth of field. One sparrow is in sharp, crisp focus high on an upper branch, showing detailed brown and cream feather patterns. Below, other sparrows nestle within the brush in soft focus, set against a creamy background of melted snow and soft, circular bokeh light discs.

Male house sparrow sitting on a bramble branch. Winter in Conneticut by the seashore. I am but a humble scribe, With neither house nor land, Yet every creature brings me joy— Even the sparrow, that rascal. He builds his nest in haste and haste From feathers, hair, and straw; He thinks it serves the purpose well— Beauty matters not a whit. When feed is scattered for the hens, He promptly joins the fray, To snatch a kernel—clever, quick, And bustling all the way. He loves the May-bug dearly, And knows just how to dine; He pecks the wings, he nips the legs, And cracks them like almonds. In the cherry tree, he slyly feasts Upon the fruit's sweet flesh; And so, the tree's proud owner finds The finest pits remain. A shot rings out. The sparrow flees And preens his ruffled plumes. He may stay gone for now, perhaps, But tomorrow he’ll return. And when it’s winter, and the snow Has blanketed the roofs, No proper sparrow starves to death— He knows the holes up there. I called: "Come, sparrow, let me feed you!" He fixed a sharp eye on me. He seemed to think that I, too, Was good for nothing much.

A lovely #spatz lady stayed a moment today .. as did Wren and a flock of Goldfinches but they were on speed.

Lady #sparrow would have none of that speed stuff & took her time in the lovely September sunshine.

“Let’s go, NOW!”
“Why?”
“ I don’t know I think I heard something…”

A cropped, abstract motion-blur photograph of two small birds caught mid-flight against the soft-focus lines of a house porch. Feathers and wings dissolve into expressive, painterly sweeps of dark movement against a muted background.

Took my new Canon Rebel out in April, hated every minute, and wrote off the shoot. Yesterday I dug into the folder and found this gem. Don't count the camera out yet!

Wildlife photograph of a male house sparrow perched delicately on a leafy, diagonal branch in early spring. The bird is captured in sharp profile, featuring its distinct slate-gray crown, deep chestnut eye band, and bold black bib. Fresh green and copper-tipped leaves frame the bird naturally along the woody branch. In the background, open water appears as a smooth, softly blurred expanse of muted silver and cool gray tones, providing natural optical depth and isolation for the perched songbird.

Good morning everyone 🌎 ⚘️🍂🪶

Das Werk hinterfragt Totholz durch eine temporäre Kugelform. Ein stiller, leicht aufgeplusterter Protest.

The work questions deadwood through a temporary sphere. A silent, mildly fluffed protest.

A close-up color photograph of a small sparrow captured in mid-flight motion against a weathered chain-link fence. The bird is turned toward the right, clutching a seed in its beak, with its right wing blurred in rapid motion as it beats against the air. The plumage glows in warm tawny brown, buff, and ochre tones, contrasted against the cool gray diamond grid of the wire mesh. In the dark background behind the fence, subtle green creeping ivy leaves cling to an urban wall.

Wings against the chop and gold in the clouds. A rare moment when the tide, the light, and the flock all decided to align.

A vertical telephoto photograph capturing a lively flock of tree swallows along a coastal sound. In the blurred foreground, a tangled thicket of pale branches is crowded with numerous resting swallows in soft focus. Several birds are caught in sharp mid-flight across the center: one banking low with spread wings, another gliding toward the left, and a larger bird sweeping across the upper right. Behind them, choppy, light-grey water stretches to a low horizon. Heavy, dramatic clouds fill the upper third of the sky, illuminated with warm pockets of golden sunlight breaking through.
