It was besieged by Royalists in February and March 1644 during the English Civil War. When the small Parliamentarian garrison eventually surrendered, with the exception of the commander they were all massacred.

Although the tower has the superficial appearance of a Norman Keep, in practice it is a fairly thin-walled tower house built on the motte of an earlier motte and bailey. The inner bailey also appears to have been walled.
