horse chestnut seed pods
fall burst on the ground
smooth shiny magnificent
a beginning an ending
fruitfulness before mists settle
and light withdraws

in the leaf litter
a small bird
skeleton all flesh gone
unfledged
a beginning an ending
feathered rags on
one extended wing
lace rib cage white
delicate as an early frost

O make me a mask and a wall to shut from your spies
Of the sharp, enamelled eyes and the spectacled claws
Rape and rebellion in the nurseries of my face.
Gag of dumbstruck tree to block from bare enemies
The bayonet tongue in this undefended prayerpiece . . .

by Dylan Thomas

From casolia.com: a photo of a bohemian mask leaning against a wooden fence. The white face mask is decorated with coral flowers, green leaves, and ornate gold trim around the eyes and the entire mask.

"Mask" by Stephen Spender

The face of the landscape is a mask of bone and iron lines where time has plowed its character...

As man behind his mask still wears a child.

A 1920's photo of man looking at his own reflection in an old wooden mirror. However, the reflection he sees is one of himself as a child.
