Henry: maybe Hotspur & Hal were switched at birth? #ProdigalPrince #SlowShakespeare

Richard Coyle as King Henry in Player Kings 2024: immaculate dress uniform (Marshal of the Royal Air Force) right down to the medals, a year after the coronation of Charles III.

A photograph of a character in a play. Three-quarter length, a middle-aged man wearing elaborate dress uniform: a dark blue tunic over black trousers with a red stripe. A gold and red belt with enormous tassels; a blue sash, lots of gold braid and medals. He's wearing white gloves. He looks serious and worried, and is standing in front of a tan curtain.

King Henry: Hotspur is brilliant; my son Harry, though? Not so much #ProdigalPrince #SlowShakespeare

John Gielgud as King Henry in Chimes at Midnight (1965), the combined Henry IV dir. Orson Welles. It creaks, now, but the cinematography is amazing.

A still from a film. Close-up on a man wearing a crown. He's wearing a dark robe with a high collar. He's lit from the right, and there's a small barred window partly visible behind him, otherwise, it's deeply shadowed. He looks serious and preoccupied.

King Henry: Hotspur's done well for himself; Westmorland: indeed #ProdigalPrince #SlowShakespeare

Poster for the 2005 @nationaltheatre.org.uk Henry IV: David Bradley (Henry, L), Michael Gambon (Falstaff, C) & Matthew Macfadyen (Hal, R). What about HOTSPUR?

A theatre poster. It's dominated by a half-length black and white image of three men, all wearing black, the one in the middle standing further forward. The men standing centre and left are older than the man on the right, who is giving serious side eye. A logo in the bottom right corner reads NT. By William Shakespeare is in vertical white text up the middle. The plays' titles, Henry IV Part 1, Henry IV Part II, are in purple and pink diagonal lettering in the top third of the poster. It's on a white ground.

Another image from the Donmar Henry IV, dir. Phyllida Lloyd 2014. Jade Anouka (R) as Hotspur, Cynthia Erivo (!) as Douglas. (they join forces later, here sparring together) 📸Helen Maybanks

A photograph of a play in performance. Dimly lit from the side, two young women wearing prison-type grey tracksuit bottoms and black vests, with heavy black trainers, are sparring in red gloves. The woman on the left has THE DOUGLAS written on her vest.

One of the most influential recent Henry IVs: dir. Phyllida Lloyd @donmarwarehouse.bsky.social, first in 2014, within the frame of a women's prison. Jade Anouka, centre, as HOTSPUR.

Henry IV opened the Barbican in 1982, dir. Trevor Nunn. This is the poster, reimagining the Agas map of late C16 London, in the rough shape of the British Isles. Maps matter in this play.

The poster for a play. On a dark background, there's an old-fashioned city map, with lots of little buildings, houses, churches etc, a cathedral at the top, so that it's roughly triangular, like the British Isles. The map is orange with black outlines. Red lettering at the top reads Henry IV, a history in two parts. A logo at the bottom reads RSC Barbican Theatre.

James Laurenson as Westmorland in the Hollow Crown 2012. Laurenson (1940-2024) was a Kiwi actor whose student acting career was shaped by Ngaio Marsh.

A still photograph of a character in a film. Half length, an older man, with a neat grey-white beard and moustache, and hair to his collar. He's wearing a grey velvet robe with a high collar and a big fox-fur collar, with a couple of heavy gold chains of office. He looks serious and dignified.

A first outing for Jeremy Irons as Henry in the BBC's Hollow Crown (2012) & as Richard II @the-rsc.bsky.social 1986. Strong Plantagenet family resemblance.

A publicity photograph for a television series. A handsome middle-aged man wearing a crown, with alternating fleurs de lys, leaves, and crosses. He's wearing a brown robe with a big dark fur collar and cuffs, and a dark scarf tied around his neck. He has a neat salt and pepper beard and moustache.A black and white photograph of a character in a play. The same man, much younger, wearing a shabby floppy white shirt; his hair is messy and he has stubble. He has a jewelled collar around his neck that looks a bit like a fallen crown.

Jasper Britton as Henry in the opening scene of 1 Henry IV @the-rsc.bsky.social 2014, its design (des. Stephen Brimson Lewis) emphasising the religious context & language here.

A photograph of a play in performance. A king wearing a crown stands centre stage; it's dimly lit, with an enormous projection of a stained glass rose window on the floor, sanctuary lamps and a big crucifix hanging above, and a prayer desk in the foreground. There are monks with lighted candles standing in the background.

A black and white photograph of a character in a play. A middle-aged man wearing a long pale robe with a high collar, with an elaborate crown on his head. His hands are clasped in his lap as he sits; he's speaking and looking serious.

Here's Richard Coyle as King Henry IV in Player Kings, the 2024 composite version of 1+2 Henry by Rob Icke.

A photograph of a play in performance. A king stands with a big crown, a red velvet and ermine robe, and an orb and sceptre in his hands; he's just been crowned. There are four people in very formal black suits standing around him, bowing; one of them has a purple cushion, which the crown has just been carried on. Other people are watching from the back of the stage, dimly lit. The mood is solemn.

#ProdigalPrince my new #SlowShakespeare blog, reading 1 Henry IV every day, around 10 lines at a time, starts TOMORROW, 1 October! Here's one of my favourite Hals (and actors): Geoffrey Streatfeild @the-rsc.bsky.social 2007-8, with David Warner as Falstaff.

A photograph of a play in performance. An older man with luxuriant white hair and beard is looking past the camera, holding up both his hands. He's wearing a crumpled white shirt and a reddish-brown leather jerkin, undone and unkempt, over an ample belly, with a jaunty red scarf. Sitting behind him, feet up on a bed, is a younger man with slicked down blond hair, wearing cream trousers tucked into black boots, a messy white shirt and cream jerkin. And quite a lot of eyeliner.

Joseph Fiennes as Shakespeare wearing a rather grubby shirt with an unnecessarily plunging neckline. He is looking quizzically/sultrily past the inky quill which he is holding in his ink-stained fingers.
