#MinCup26 Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is used to dissolve silicates. HF is rather scary stuff. #Quartz is the most common silicate on Earth. Don't make geochemists studying trace elements have to use HF. Vote for #skutterudite.

Chose chaos! Vote #Skutterudite #MinCup26

The crossover continues!

While #Quartz can make valuable laser components, #skutterudite can make a laser into powerful pulses, according to 2018 paper "Femtosecond mode-locking of a fiber laser using a CoSb3-skutterudite-based saturable absorber". #skutterudite has the edge.

Right!?? Who would vote for something so annoying as sand - in your boots, in your frying pan, in your windscreen … wtf! None of this is likely to happen with #Skutterudite! 😅

#MinCup26 #Quartz, the white bread toast of minerals. Vote #skutterudite. #anyMineralButQuartz

#Skutterudite looks so much more badass, but I will never not love the perfection of #quartz. It can do so much. It is so lovely.

As some of us in Aus settle in for the Grand Final, as a Hawthorn fan I'm more focused on the Quarter Final of #MinCup26. From a crystal structure view battle of octahedra coordination within #Skutterudite vs tetrahedral coordination within #Quartz. Tough call today, but #Quartz gets the call.

Image of the crystal structure of Skutterudite viewed along its c axis. Cobalt, Iron and Nickle positions are represented by blue spheres/polygons (they all sit in the same position and occupy that at some time or another), Arsenic by green spheres. Drawn from entry #9417 in the American mineral databaseImage representing the crystal structure of quartz- here red spheres represent oxygen atoms, and blue spheres/polygons represent silicon atoms. The structure has been expanded over b axis to show off quite how really basic it is. Yes it is piezoelectric, but don't let that sway you. The representation is drawn in VESTA from entry #789 in the American mineralogist database

#MinCup26 Come on #skutterudite - discovered in Norway and loaded with arsenic. Not normally on team poison, but let's go team poison!

I have no idea why I can’t vote for #Quartz, I wanted to, but no, I voted for #Skutterudite. Quartz isn’t even a ‘boring’ mineral, I just don’t want it to win, I guess.

#MinCup26 Quarterfinal 2
Both of today's minerals can be found in hydrothermal vein deposits as cobalt arsenide #Skutterudite is against classic silicate #Quartz for a spot in the semi-finals.

Vesuvianite may be a pretty gem but Skutterudite has played a role in art history as smalt, a pigment in paint, glass and ceramics for centuries so I am voting #Skutterudite!
