Birdtober Day 9 - Crested Auklet
Both genders secrete a tangerine smelling odor from the back of their necks. A ruff sniff is a courtship behavior where a bird will bury its face in the ruff of another bird and take a deep whiff.

Some days you just gotta play dead, ya know?

Birdtober Day 8 - Roadrunner
I gave it a pair of Hoka’s because good supportive footwear is essential.

Birdtober 2026 Day 7 - Peregrine Falcon. They are considered the fastest animal on the planet. They hunt via a high speed and high altitude dive called a stoop, reaching speeds over 200 mph.

Birdtober Day 4 -Painted Bunting. Like many bird species, the male needs to have rizz.

Birdtober 2026 Day 3 - Green Heron. They are shy birds but territorial and will puff up like this when threatened or agitated. I thought it looked very punk.

Birdtober Day 2 -Harpy Eagle. Their crest made me think of 80s hair and the SNL skit “Amy’s Room” with Amy Poehler and Bon Jovi. And yeah, that’s Aqua Net.

It’s Birdtober! Day 1 is the Willow Ptarmigan. Because of the prominent combs of the eyes, the males made me think of Groucho Marx. I didn’t include Groucho’s eyeglasses because glasses on a bird is ridiculous.

#sketchoftheday: Drawn in 2021 after the unmarked grave discovery at the Kamloops Residential School. In solidarity, and with an abject rejection of denialism on this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. #orangeshirtday #everychildmatters

Sketch of the day. I love sushi as much as I like not thinking about the ramifications of eating raw fish.

Sketch of the day. I spent the better part of the week in jury duty - specifically jury selection. I completely understand why it’s an incredibly slow process. But I think Lady Justice should be changed to the Tortoise of Justice.
