Posted on October 2, 2026 The Gerringer Labnbsp;atnbsp;Whitman College is hiring a postdoctoral fellow to study physiological adaptations to high #hydrostatic pressures in deep-sea #fishes. The lab group explores the #physiology and #ecology of deep-sea animals across scales, from molecular to organismal. On this project, Dr. Mackenzie Gerringer and the Fellow will work together to understand how high pressures and cold temperatures have influenced the evolution of proteins and enzymes in the deep ocean. Small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) will be used to compare the structural biochemistry of key #biomolecules from fishes that live across habitat pressures and temperatures. This project will inform new understanding of life in the deep ocean and the interacting effects of temperature and pressure on #biological systems. In this position, the Fellow will have the opportunity to conduct impactful research and to develop teaching skills in a collaborative and affirming environment.

Division of Evolutionary Developmental Biology

DEDB:

https://sicb.org/divisions/division-of-evolutionary-developmental-biology/

The SICB Division of #Evolutionary Developmental #Biology (DEDB) was established in 2000 and was the first formal EvoDevo organization. Since its inception, DEDB has been home to #researchers working in diverse disciplines broadly interested in understanding the evolutionary mechanisms that influence #embryonic development and the influence of development on the #evolution of #organismal diversity. Diversity is key in the EvoDevo community; we welcome members from established as well as emerging model systems, those working on #organisms from across the tree of life, and members from every career stage. Supporting our junior members is a primary goal of DEDB, so we sponsor Best Student presentation awards for oral and poster sessions at the annual meeting. Follow our bi-annual newsletter for the latest and greatest news for our division, a recurring segment highlighting one of the “forgotten heroes of science,” and a diversity spotlight focusing on the achievements of one of our junior members.

The chair is Kim Cooper

Coming to #SICB Pittsburgh?

You won't want to miss symposium
Comparative #Neuromechanics of #Animal Sensing and Movement

cf23.xcddev.com/sicb/program...

Organized by Kiisa Nishikawa ,Northern Arizona University, & more

#science #conference #biology #neuroscience

Explore :

How do #animals achieve stability, agility, and efficiency in movement across complex, changing #environments?

These capabilities arise from tight integration among sensing, neural control, muscles, and #biomechanics—often with cognition and task goals shaping what “good” control looks like. #Neuromechanics has emerged as a unifying interdisciplinary framework for explaining this integration, spanning #neuroscience, muscle #physiology, biomechanics, computer science, #robotics, and #bioengineering. Because these perspectives are distributed across SICB divisions (including Animal #Behavior, Comparative Biomechanics, #Invertebrate #Zoology, Neurobiology, #Neuroethology and Sensory Biology, and #Vertebrate #Morphology), a symposium centered on comparative neuromechanics would provide a timely venue for synthesis and cross-division exchange.

Key themes and questions to be addressed: Embodied control: How do muscle–tendon properties, limb and body design, and passive dynamics simplify (or constrain) neural control?

Sensing-through-moving: How does movement shape what animals can sense, and how do animals exploit active sensing to improve task-level performance? Stability and adaptability: What control strategies stabilize locomotion and manipulation across perturbations, contexts, and #morphologies? Comparative generality: Which neuromechanical principles are shared across taxa, and which are lineage- or environment-specific? Bridging scales: How do neural circuits and sensorimotor computations map onto whole-body mechanics and behavior?

Division of Physiology

About DPHYS:

Members of SICB’s Division of #Physiology conduct integrative and comparative research on animals to understand how they function in their unique physical and social environments. Much of the #physiological research is done from #ecological and #evolutionary perspectives. This division formed in 2026 from the merger of the Divisions of Comparative #Endocrinology (DCE) and Comparative Physiology & #Biochemistry (DCPB) with the goal of emphasizing and supporting the integrative research that is the foundation of the society.

At the annual SICB meeting, the division organizes symposia and showcases the work of early career scientists with Best Student Oral and Poster Presentations.

The division is home to two of the main society wide awards, the George A. Batholomew and the Howard A. Bern lectures. The former award recognizes a young investigator for distinguished contributions to comparative physiology and biochemistry or related fields of functional and integrative #biology. The later award celebrates the impacts of established and influential researchers in comparative endocrinology.

The goal of the Division of Ecoimmunology and Disease Ecology (DEDE) is to facilitate communication, collaboration, research, and data sharing among eco-immunologists and disease ecologists. We do this by co-sponsoring several symposia and being part of social platforms. The division also promotes mentoring and training of students and early career investigators, through mentoring programs including a mentor-mentee meet and greet carried out during the meeting, as well as through various awards for student presentations.

Members of the Division of Comparative #Biomechanics (DCB) are interested in the physical principles that govern how organisms function and, in turn, how their functional systems have been, and are, evolving. This inherently multidisciplinary field integrates ideas and techniques from #engineering, physiology, #animal #behavior, #neurobiology, computational #science, robotics, #ecology, and #evolutionary biology. Our methods are just as varied: we work in the lab and the field to engage with organisms in experiments and through observations; we design and build new types of instruments to measure motions, movements, and forces across scales of size and levels of structural hierarchy; and we create mathematical, #computational, and #robotic models to test and formalize our understanding of how organisms function and evolve.

What makes this exciting multidisciplinary research in Comparative Biomechanics work is the collaboration of individuals with diverse backgrounds and interests. Supporting collaboration — no matter who you are or where you are in your career — is the primary function of DCB.

We seek an innovative #evolutionary #biologist who will develop a world-leading, collections-based research program in Lepidoptera. The successful candidate will integrate modern approaches in evolutionary biology with genomics, imaging, computational biology, #biodiversity informatics, and/or other emerging computational approaches. We are particularly interested in scientists who envision natural-history collections not simply as repositories of specimens, but as powerful research platforms for addressing fundamental questions about evolution, biodiversity, and environmental change.

The ideal candidate will have a record of high-impact scholarship, strong potential for extramural funding, and the vision to establish an internationally recognized independent research program. Research interests may include, but are not limited to, systematics, morphology, comparative genomics, biogeography, and/or macroevolution. We are especially interested in candidates who combine organismal biology with emerging computational approaches, including machine learning, computer vision, automated specimen identification, large-scale image analysis, and other data-intensive methods for understanding biodiversity.

Excellent knowledge of #moth and #butterfly diversity is essential.

Research and Collections

The successful candidate will conduct original scientific research on Lepidoptera; steward and develop the Museum’s #Lepidoptera collection; and expand the collection through fieldwork, strategic collecting, and other accessions.

Opportunities include developing methods to extract new information from historical specimens; applying machine learning and advanced analytical methods to specimen images and biodiversity data; integrating museum specimens with genomic and environmental datasets; and developing computational approaches that accelerate species discovery, identification, classification, and our understanding of evolutionary change.
