Shelduck were my favourite kind of duck as a youthful bird-watcher because I could identify them from half a mile away without binoculars! Digital collage from urban decay photos.

Most British shelduck cross the North Sea to moult off Germany. A few thousand skip that trip for one place: Bridgwater Bay in Somerset. It is Britain's only major shelduck moulting ground.

A large duck swims on dark, rippled water facing to the right. The Shelduck is white with a chestnut coloured belly band and black plumage on its wings and tail. Its head is a very dark green that looks almost black and it has a large bright red bill.
