Fanzines and World SF:

Ok, so I'm about 80 pages in and no sign yet of giant insects. Isn't this supposed to be French #SFinTranslation from the 1960s? So where are the giant, terrifying insects? Did Barjavel just not get the memo? ๐
that the entire world, watching the live feed, is holding its breath, and then I realize that I, too, am holding my breath! Her eyelids flutter! Her mouth moves! She's about to say something!

The Ice People
Black Coat Pressโs Starblood brings two 1960s French SF tales by Nathalie Charles Henneberg into English. In The Lost Fortress, a colony ship reaches a haunted planet near Alpha Centauri. https://www.blackcoatpress.com/new-releases-starblood.html #SciFiBooks #SFInTranslation
Was going to skip The Ice People on my French #SFinTranslation list because I increasingly dislike reading on a screen but...I think I'm gonna do it. Barjavel has a seemingly good reputation (apparently his stuff is really depressing?).
Luna Monthly and the World SF Newsletter are Small Planet's Grandma and Grandpa. Shards of Babel is SP's fun aunt and the World SF Blog is SP's mom.
#SFinTranslation trivia: Rene Barjavel's La Nuit des Temps (1968) was translated into English by Charles Lam Markmann as The Ice People (1970).

I already purchased 3 Barbet books off abe (one contains two short novels) so I am about to become an expert on Barbet. Napoleons is making me want to pull my hair out. This should be fun. #SFinTranslation
Horde of the Counterwind, in

So much great #SFinTranslation out this month!
Of the 21 works of #SFinTranslation DAW published in the 70s and 80s, Barbet has the most translated books! Why, Donald Wollheim, WHYYYYYY
Pierre Boulle and Pierre Barbet both have this jaunty style but at least Boulle's stuff doesn't seem silly. Ok, I'm basing this on one Barbet book. He has 2 more chances with me because I bought 2 other books of his (before I started Napoleons).

Just finished 'The last children of Tokyo' by Yoko Tawada, translation by Margaret Mitsutani.
Interesting book, only 130 pages, wish it was longer, beautifully written account of how a future isolationist Japan is coping with contamination of land, food and people

And then Rachel discovered Shards of Babel magazine and fell down a rabbit hole.
Finally managed to find somewhere to take a preorder for the English translation of 'Horde of the Counterwind', one of the inspirations for Clair Obscura: Expedition 33.
Apparently a cult SF classic in France and one @rachelcordasco.bsky.social has raved about
