Sadabad ring by Sevan Biçakçi, c. 2000 (gold, silver, diamonds and rock crystal)

Jewellery photograph of the "Sadabad ring" by Istanbul-based jeweller Sevan Biçakçi, c. 2000, made from gold, silver, diamonds, and rock crystal. Photographed against a dark grey background, the ring is an extraordinary example of Biçakçi's signature technique of reverse intaglio carving and micro-painting inside a large dome of faceted rock crystal. The ring's shank is warm yellow gold, tapering upward to a wide oxidised silver bezel set densely with rose-cut and marquise-cut diamonds arranged in an elaborate architectural pattern of nested pointed arches and geometric clusters — the setting referencing Ottoman and Mughal decorative metalwork traditions. Above this, the massive rock crystal cabochon rises like a dome, and within it — carved and painted from the inside in miniature — is a detailed representation of an Ottoman imperial palace complex: multiple domes of varying sizes clustered together, their surfaces white with gold detailing at the ribs and finials, suggesting the rooftop skyline of a great Istanbul building as seen from above. The image inside the crystal is simultaneously a miniature painting, a carved relief, and an architectural model, all enclosed within a transparent hemisphere that magnifies and protects it. Sadabad was an eighteenth-century Ottoman pleasure palace on the Golden Horn, and the ring belongs to Biçakçi's ongoing practice of enclosing Istanbul's architectural and historical memory within wearable objects of lapidary intricacy.
