I am in Hamburg! It's been a wonderful couple of days attending the annual conference of the Search Engines and Society Network (#SEASON2026). Today, I presented a talk titled "Emancipatory IR: Towards Critical Theories and Practices" (slides: bhaskar-mitra.github.io/files/emanci...).

Screenshot of the title slide. The slide has the SEASON logo on the top; followed by a search box with the query "Emancipatory IR: Towards Critical Theories and Practices" and the search glass replaced by a protest fist. Below it lists the following details: "Bhaskar Mitra (he/him), Independent Researcher, Tiohtià:ke / Mooniyang / Montréal, Canada". Then it lists my website (bhaskar-mitra.github.io), Bluesky handle (@bmitra.bsky.social), and email (bhaskar.mitra@acm.org). Finally it lists "My relevant research themes:" with 3 buttons captioned "Emancipatory Information Access" (https://bhaskar-mitra.github.io/theme-emancipatory-ia/), "AI & Society" (https://bhaskar-mitra.github.io/theme-ai-and-society/), and "Exposure Fairness and Transparency in Information Access" (https://bhaskar-mitra.github.io/theme-fairness/). At the bottom there is a thin horizontal image of people protesting with signs and raised fits spanning the whole width of the slide.

Great session at #SEASON2026 on methods for search engine research, also featuring my excellent colleagues Kateryna Kasianenko and Ashwin Nagappa, discussing our ADM+S Centre Australian Search Experience project. Liveblog here:

Fabulous, comprehensive #SEASON2026 keynote by the great Katrin Weller from @gesis.org on where we are with VLOPSE data access under the labyrinthine EU Digital Services Act. TL;DR: it’s complicated, but researchers must push hard to make it work for us.

Just chaired a fascinating (if slightly depressing) session on critical AI literacies at #SEASON2026. TL;DR: it’s complicated, but the presentations themselves were much richer than that (non-AI) summary. Liveblog here:

Fabulous #SEASON2026 panel on organic search results and AI Overviews for searches relating to elections and referenda in 🇪🇺, 🇺🇸, 🇩🇪, and 🇨🇭 contexts, raising more questions than answers at this point about how (and whether) these overviews work. Liveblog here:

Fascinating keynote by Thomas Höppner to start the Search Engines and Society (#SEASON2026) conference in Hamburg, outlining the current state of EU and US anti-trust cases addressing Google’s market dominance in search. Liveblog here:
