Seriously though. It peaked at over 2500 requests per minute (my server couldn't handle any more), and it came from over 100,000 IP addresses?!?!?

Banned IP address graph from my server's Grafana dashboard. Over 100,000 IP addresses banned due to malicious scraping activity.

Above the graph, there is requests per user agent. It was much higher, peaking at about 2400 requests per minute. Notice how these are all generic browser agents. Almost all of these are actually AI scrapers spoofing their user agents.

I'm gonna have to increase the minimum ban duration.

2,400 requests per minute is not normal for a small blog!

UPDATE: Services are restored. For now we've been able to hold back the tide of AI crawlers.

The OpenStreetMap.org website and API are struggling. We are fighting a large set of AI crawlers / scrapers. Working to restore service as soon as possible. #AI #Scrapers
