The last 4 days I spent 8 hours at Lower Moors #Scilly trying to photo the key features of Wilson's Snipe without it once spreading its tail or wings! So relieved that someone else managed it. A very striking monochromatic bird that convinced straight away. ID notes in alt #ukbirding #birds

Wilson's Snipe, Lower Moors, Scilly - 06/10. Note strong and dense barring on flanks with no buff ground colour. The grey centred covert and tertial feathers with whitish tipped coverts were very distinctive.Wilson's Snipe, Lower Moors, Scilly - 04/10. Scapulars and crown feathers very black and uniform with very few paler edges. Narrow crown stripe and whitish braces contrasting very strongly with background, rather like Jack Snipe.Wilson's Snipe, Lower Moors, Scilly - 03/10. we arrived in the ISBG hide 15 minutes after the bird was found. This was taken from Hilda Quick hide. On the underparts the buff colouration is limited to the neck and up onto the headLower Moors, Scilly - 04/10. The bird that some thought was the Wilson's but was actually Common Snipe. This photos shows some key differences - particularly covert, tertial and scapular ground colour and pattern, flanks, and head pattern

Day 3 & 4 in Isles of #Scilly Went back for seconds of lifer Wilson's Snipe once it was confirmed by underwing. From above the impression was of a large Jack Snipe.
Shooters Pool was delightful, much bird activity incl YBW, Lesser Whitethroat, Blackcaps & Water rails. Also Jack Snipe & Firecrests 🪶

A small bird with a firey crest & a wader amongst the reeds.

Day 2 in Isles of #Scilly Cycled down to the Sapphire for a pelagic via RC Starling. At sea: 200 Grey Phalarope, Great Shears, year tick Sooty & Cory's. Euro & a Leach's Petrel. Best moment was being still on the water surrounded by many of the above & dolphins close too. Stormie by Vickie Heaney 🪶

We saw this little sparrow at Juliet’s Garden on St Mary’s Scilly Islands. It was keen to relieve us of any crumbs from our lunch!

Apart from Fin Whales the undoubted highlight of the #Scilly pelagic today was the incredible sight of at least 180 Grey Phalaropes in groups of up to 35 scattered across the sea. Just stunning 😳 With @aravindramesh19.bsky.social @matthall95.bsky.social @oscardewhurst.bsky.social #ukbirding #birds

We often have a week’s holiday in the Isles of Scilly at this time of year. This year we didn’t make it, but here’s a picture I painted years ago of where we stay. #Scilly #landscape #painting #art

They say it has been a clouded yellow summer in the Uk heat…

But I had still never seen one, until yesterday in the St Mary’s Scilly Island dunes!

So beautiful and such a rich shade of yellow in flight!
