Can we know what the surface of another star looks like?

And if we could image a star of any mass the way we see the Sun, what instrument or composite would you use to get the most visual detail?

All eleven mass ranges to scale, radii close to the law real main sequence stars follow. The smallest outlives the universe and the largest lives two million years.

The Starlife mass ladder poster. Eleven stars drawn to scale as a column of overlapping circles, climbing from a tiny deep red dot at the top through yellow and near-white, then blues that deepen as the circles grow, down to a huge vivid blue disc running off the bottom left corner. Down the right side, each star's name and mass: NIK 0.3, NED 1, ALC 2, ENA 10, MEA 25, PIP 35, RHS 55, IND 75, PAP 95, MIK 130 and CRS 200 solar masses. Title: Mass Ladder. Top left: Starlife. It's about time. starlife.info, #playstarlife. Along the bottom: Drawn to scale, sized by the real mass-radius relation. The smallest will outlive the universe. The largest lives two million years.
