Sometimes you go places & you spend a solid a solid twenty minutes telling a friend how beautiful it is.

Sometimes you go places & the best you can do is gape.

Enaka's done a bit of both.

"So where are we going?" I asked.

Kain opened the door for us. "Vayneguard," Koume answered. "My home."

"One of the most famous royal palaces in Afredal," Theso replied.

I looked up at the large, military compound looming high over the majority of Raj Akadt, its pink and gold national flags barely perceptible on the sprawling marble, brick and slate buildings set astride the Glittering Falls. I knew it from Dawn Temple history as a place of tragedy; from architecture as a masterpiece; and from the Watchers as a thorn in national pride. Not that I had much national pride in Eiras at that moment.

It wasn't every day that a tunora got to walk into the original capitol of Afredal, current home of the Empress' brother and the two most popular spare heiresses to the Imperial throne.

"Oh," I said.

I promise there are times when Enaka gets a break from all the machinations, the hostility, & the monsters.

But this isn't it.

"He's not going to bomb Eirholdt," Theso replied dryly. He seemed unimpressed by the mere suggestion of something so ludicrous. "The archduke knows better."

"If rumors of your permanent death had been true, it wouldn't be so far-fetched as you think."

Theso paused at this, unhappy with that answer. "But I did get better."

The rest of the ride was mostly silent, though towards the end as we approached Akert's east side train station, Aaliyah glanced at Theso's fingers laced with mine, and she told us both, "Be careful."

Theso frowned as the driver opened the door to let us out, but said nothing as we and our two escorts walked through the train station together until we boarded a car guarded by military personnel. We didn't have to push through crowds; sight of those white suits earned us ample space between our group and the nearest civilian. All the place looked a mess with people trying to leave, and relief efforts still seemed to be going in full force with lines of people and signage pointing out resources and hotlines. The smell of body odor and trash permeated the place, but on the train was replaced by vinyl and metal shavings and the particular cleaner they used on the car.

On board we joined more of Koume's white-suited bodyguards that I recognized from before. I resisted the very strong urge to run.

A heist on the edge of the inhabitable world. An unwelcome new employer.

Enaka's out of Akert, & no good deed goes unpunished. With no safe harbor from the Casir, their only choice is to secure the Flute from one of Eiras' most defensive bases—a titanic tower
