A thread from today's RLUK Digital Shift Forum event on #LinkedData #RLUKDSF #metadata #discovery 🧵
Leeds have joined the SCONUL UK Open Bibliographic Metadata Group and are working with other institutions on a UK BlueCore instance that will move UK libraries forward to a shared open metadata ecosystem & infrastructure with richer data, better connections, & less duplication of effort #RLUKDSF
In this environment the role of the Metadata Librarian shift from cataloguing individual items in relative isolation or silos, to managing metadata at scale - contributing to a shared open dataset that builds a knowledge graph #RLUKDSF
Authority Control is crucial here - reconciling Names and Name Entities is fundamental to make accurate connections that build the Knowledge Graph #RLUKDSF
Leeds want to make connections between their collections described in different systems across cultural heritage, art, archival, & bibliographic resources - they are using the Linked Art Data Model linked.art/model/intro/ #RLUKDSF
In 2022 Leeds joined the UK NACO funnel to contribute to LC Name Authorities - this work has become focussed on Names that require disambiguation
Wikidata acts as a complimentary source for Name Entities connecting to LC Name Authorities, VIAF & ISNI via embedded Identifiers (PIDs) #RLUKDSF
Sinopia BIBFRAME Editor can be used to more clearly express the relationships between 'Bound-withs' - moving from a flat MARC record to a more three-dimensional model - BUT still waiting for Alma to support BIBFRAME Items - on the roadmap for 2027! #RLUKDSF
Custodial history and other copy-specific information can be more clearly described when using the LD4Libraries RMAG templates at Item Level #RLUKDSF
BIBFRAME enables relationships to be more clearly stated, and copy-specific information can be recorded at the Item Level #RLUKDSF
MARC is not always the ideal format for cataloguing rare print collections, because it is difficult to fully express the relationships between materials and collections, persons, places and other entities. Copy-specific data such as custodial history can become hidden. #RLUKDSF
Now Alison Hazelaaar and Kim Taylor form @leedsunilibraries.bsky.social speak about the @exlibrisclvt.bsky.social Linked Open Data Working Group to explore the potential of #BIBFRAME & using #WIKIDATA to complement NACO. #RLUKDSF
This will only work if a critical mass of Libraries get behind it & work together to enhance Linked Data Entities into a connected ecosystem - Linked Data will eventually replace MARC (via BIBFRAME) but collaboration & investment is essential for libraries to move forward coherently #RLUKDSF
Connecting Entities together creates a Knowledge Graph enabling users to see relationships that they wouldn't otherwise be aware of - and that cannot be adequately expressed in traditionally library catalogues (ie MARC environment) #RLUKDSF
Standardising the Entity Record for a Person - covering Key Information, Significant Dates and various Characteristics, plus Identifiers such as @wikidatacommunity.bsky.social & Related Entities: Person, Places, Works, Organizations #RLUKDSF
*Parkes Collection #RLUKDSF
UoS chose to work on the Pareks Collection of Holocaust Memoirs - this was difficult material with sensitive subject matter and a need to be respectful of the Persons described in the collections. What is the correct Entity Type for places associated with the holocaust? #RLUKDSF
The idea was to enrich metadata with Person Entity URIs & to ensure that the Entities themselves in Meridian were enriched and as full and detailed as possible - challenges involved resourcing the enrichment of Meridian Entities & ensuring data quality & consistency #RLUKDSF
