Just watched U n Chien Andalou, starting spooktober at the beginning

Un Chien Andalou was a powerful watch, both in terms of its message and display of simple yet effective filmmaking techniques. Kuleshov’s power reigned, especially during the cloud crossing the moon shots, and the grotesque horrors the we saw realised through practical effects looked brilliant and planted inspiring ideas in the mind of an amateur film maker.

The message I detected was simple yet strong; to me it spoke of the sexual harassment and assault sadistic men with warped ideologies, here represented by the religious dogma wielded on pianos and the nun outfit worn by the first man, force on every women they see. The film seems to end by doubling down and saying that it’s not just the guys with red flags women should be wary of, traditional masculine identity will kill relationships in the end.
Maybe the Chien in the title refers the the normalised relentless drive of guys who “got that dawg in him”, guys being sexually aggressive and dogs would’ve existed in 1920s France.
