A Red Admiral (vanessa atalanta) butterfly resting on a grey shimmering metal bar on a balcony. The upper third of the wing is very dark brown, with some white spots and white border. Then there is a bright orange band across and continuing at the border of the lower half-wing, with some regularly spaced black spots. The inner part of the wing is lighter brown, as is its body. Its long feelers alternate between black and white. In the background below are some bushes and leaves on a path out of focus.

Happy to see around a half dozen Red Admiral in the garden in NE Scotland today. Also had 2 Small Tortoiseshells, 2 Small White, 1 Painted Lady and 1 Peacock
