Book 2.108: The Right to Remain Silent
- February 23rd, 2026

#readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

The Compass Man continues talking down to Boone like he’s a kid, cupping his hands around Boone’s overwhelmed face. “Nino tonto. Gonna need an answer.” Boone: “Buh buh but -” Boone looks back at the screen uncertainly. “Hhhhhhhhmmmmmn...” He grins sheepishly and lifts one finger: “Can you play it back, one more time?” The Compass Man’s eyes turn yellow and red and he grins devilishly while snapping his fingers again. “I said ANSWER -not question!!!” A prison cell comes out of the sky and falls on top of Boone as he yells “YEEEEEEEEE” and wraps his arms around himself protectively. Notably, there is a Venus (female) symbol on the prison cell. The Compass Man snaps a photo of Boone using a vintage camera, then gleefully presents a mugshot of Boone, in orange prison garb, with a pink tag on his ear and an inmate number of 5318008. “’Boone Pygmy’. Age: Thirty-three. Sex: F-” Boone interrupts him quickly, clutching the bars of his cell. “I HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT!!!”

Book 1.108: Reeeeach
- February 15th, 2021

#readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics

Romy hesitates at the doorway. Boone's voice calls out, "ROMY!" Romy turns toward the hallway (everything is in a monochrome red, adding to the sense of urgency and danger). Boone's leg is dragged away by thin spider webs, and he reaches out a hoof toward Romy as he clutches at the carpet under him. "P-PLEASE! Before it drags me to hell... I mean - HECK!" Romy starts running after him. 'Hold on! I'm coming!' She reaches her own paw toward him, and it comes closer to touching Boone's hoof, before he's yanked away, with Romy's paw instead clamping onto the surrounding air. Boone continues screaming as he is lifted away and slightly upward. "ROOOOOOOH-MEEEEEEY!" Romy slams snout-first on the ground.

Book 2.107: Unfair Weather Fiend
- February 16th, 2026

#readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

Boone sweats anxiously, trying to concentrate on the flashing symbols on the screen which are all beeping and booping, appearing and disappearing much quicker than he can decipher (this is a visual allegory for how Boone’s ADHD feels like to him). Boone, leaning in, his eyes filled with clouds that continue to leak from his ears all over the page: “Uhhhhhhhhhhhh” A microphone is suddenly slammed against his snout, as the Compass Man pressures him for an answer. “Uno, dos - time’s up!!! Answer quickly!” He starts counting down (“cinco, quatro, tres”) as Boone grunts, then yells out in frustration, venting more clouds out of his head as he does so: “THIS ISN’T FAIR!” Compass Man: “Not f-” Boone flails his arms dramatically and projects his voice from his stand, causing the Compass Man to wither in the wind from the force of it. “I HAVE ATTENTION DEFICIT!!!”

Book 1.107: Damsel in Distress
- February 8th, 2021

#readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics

Romy's head swivels around toward the doorway where the scream was heard. 'That's... Boone?' Boone stands at the doorway, looking panicky, with both arms raised against the wall. Echo sticks a finger in her ear. "Ah, yes. One of the fundamental laws of nature. You'll always HEAR Boone coming before you see him." Boone pulls at his ears in despair. "THEY'RE AFTER ME!!!" Echo asks, calmly, "Uh... who?" Boone, exasperated: "Th- THE GHOSTS! Who else?!" He shivers at the doorway. "Echo, HELP! They're -" Something winds around his leg and yanks him down the hall. "AAAAAAIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!" Echo puts a hand to Romy's shoulder. "Come on, Romy. We better go after him." Romy looks on, worriedly but determined. 'Right.'

Book 2.106: Cloud and Clear
- February 9th, 2026

#readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

The Compass Man twists his pinky finger around in Boone’s ear. “Say, ‘Smallhorn’. Hope it’s not too cloudy in there!” He then pulls a giant cloud out of Boone’s head, both eyes big and transparent while the cloud in question passes through. The cloud itself is basically a giant thought bubble with the word ‘HUH?!’ plastered on it, voicing Boone’s exact thought at that moment. Compass Man: “Because I’ve got a super fun challenge for your SPECIAL brain.” The compass guy hangs upside down over the tv screen, which is now much larger in scale, presented in front of a tiny Boone. Symbols on the screen write out the word ‘MEMORIZE’, as several shapes of pink, blue and white with various astronomical symbols on them flash before his eyes. Compass: “Easy peasy, like cornbread and pie! Can you remember the pattern in your mind’s eye? PAY ATTENTION, boy! And repeat the sequence you see in the sky. !Vamos! !Vamos!” He leans in to whisper condescendingly in Boone’s ear, “That means go.” Boone, snapping to attention: “NOW?!”

Book 1.106: Special
- February 1st, 2021

#readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics

Romy thinks back to what she remembered hearing near the gas station. 'So it's true, then. Slumber really is a place we can't leave.' She sweats nervously. 'And maybe... not everyone is as complaisant as they seem...' Echo interrupts Romy's thoughts with an "Anyway." She hands the phone back to Romy. "Here." Romy looks back at the phone screen, which displays the time 3:00 with a row of question marks underneath. Echo advises, "If I were you, I'd try to keep an eye on your phone in case that number calls you again." She explains further. "This may sound a bit strange. But. I think your phone has the potential to be... SPECIAL. Especially seeing as it carried over with you to Slumber." Romy asks, "Special? You mean like -" She's unable to finish that thought, as a loud BAAAAAAAAAA! resonates from somewhere nearby, startling and shaking Romy and Echo with the sudden loudness of it.

Book 2.105: Smallhorn
- February 2nd, 2026

#readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

The pile of rocks Boone is standing on suddenly shifts sideways to drop him on the stage, front and center with the Compass Man gameshow host. The other rock towers with Romy and Echo are seen in the background, as well as the tv screen with Boone’s face under a ‘Player 1’ arrow. Compass Man, introducing Boone, “Our first contestant - how about YOU?” Boone: “Whuh?” “Everyone’s favorite forgetful baffoon: BOONE!” The Compass Man goes into a long-winded introductory segment, while snapping his fingers above Boone’s head; Boone blushes as his horns and beard magically start to shrink down. “Hailing from the ‘boonies’ of Hayzelton, Iowa, this dumb country bumpkin was bullied and estranged from his own family on the farm... just to become a FAILED college dropout with insecurities bigger than his tiny horns!” A close-up shot has Compass Man slapping a ruler comedically against Boone’s shrunken horn, which is now barely an inch long. “Oh? A SORE spot for you? That’s okay -” Boone’s pants are magically snapped back to once again expose his underwear, while the Compass Man’s arrow scarf points toward him mockingly. Boone blushes deeper and covers his tiny horns with his hooves. Compass: “A REAL man, he is not! Though he remembered his pants, so can we really be sure?” Boone: “NOT COOL!”

- January 25th, 2021

#readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics

Echo confirms to Romy, "Nothing but static on the other end." She closes her eyes and gives a pained smile. "I guess I was just hoping... ah. It's silly." Romy: "What is?" Echo averts her eyes. "Well. You know..." She explains further. "Your phone is the first one I've seen since I came to Slumber myself. I thought we might have a chance of establishing contact... with someone on the outside." Romy is startled, remembering an earlier conversation that implied something similar. "The outside?! You mean... outside of Slumber... right?" Echo: "Yeah. I suppose Boone must've already told you... frankly, I'd be MORE surprised if he didn't."

Lester, half-drunk, probably having trouble processing the stimulating environment: "So'z... uhh. It don't matter if we get it right? *hic*..." The compass man leans deviously over his stand. "Oh, !Que tonto eres! You should DEFINITELY get it right. Or I'll make sure you suffer the consequences. He appearances underneath Boone's face, pointing a finger upwards. "WHAT consequences, I hear you ask?" He points his finger off to the side, underneath Echo's chin, "That's yet to be determined! But I'll give you a hint..." He hangs upside down over Romy, both fingers pointed together, "Don't answer WRONG, and you won't suffer them!" As he waltzes away on the stage, Lester takes a swig of his booze and says, "... I'll sit this'n out, thanks." Compass man: "!EQUIVADO! Now who's ready to play for a way? Let's get started!"

Echo lifts her finger toward the phone, staring down at its glow. She then taps the screen to accept the call. She holds it up to her ear. "... hello?" Echo waits for a response, as Romy wipes away her tears in the background. Echo continues waiting, and Romy glances up, a bit curious. Echo murmurs sadly as she hangs up the call. Romy asks, "Wh-who was it?" Echo frowns, appearing steadily more worried. "..... I don't know..."

An establishing shot sets the scene further, as we see the compass man standing on a piece of floating stage floor, gazing down upon the four of them from their stands, which are all loosely tethered to long teetering structures of rock that seem to extend far down into a dark void below. Compass Man: "Bienvenida, dreamers, cave dwellers, and stinky smellers! Today we shall play:" *a screen in the background displays "What's My Way?". "Here's how it works..." The compass man explains the rules into a microphone while the four gameshow contestants are tossed around on their spiraling rock towers. "I ask you a question. You ANSWER the question. HOW you answer determines the WHERE that you go! Simple, ?si?"

With the light source gone, the group is now in the dark again, their eyes giving expressions of shock, confusion and anxiety. The mitted hand flips a light switch, and suddenly, Boone, Echo, Lester and Romy are all transported onto a flashy gameshow stage with blaring rainbow lights and purple decor. All of them are in color coded sparkly costumes with top hats and bowties and suits, and color-coded stands, all with their names on them. Boone is in red, Echo is in blue, Lester is in yellow, and Romy is in green. The Compass Man, off-screen, announces them to the stage in a singsongy voice: "TA-DAAAAAAA!"

The scene suddenly transitions back to Romy's hotel room, where things are relatively back to normal (no anthropomorphic furniture) and Romy's just staring down at their buzzing phone, teary-eyed and petrified and kinda shell-shock. Echo's shadow lurks behind the door, a bit creepily at first, before coming into view with a slightly concerned but mostly indiscernible expression. "..... Romy?" Romy looks up at Echo, speechless. As she comes closer, Romy pulls into herself anxiously, apologizing to Echo in fear of another confrontation. "I'm so sorry, Echo. I didn't find -" Echo brushes off the apology though, instead voicing her concern for the scared and crying Romy. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Echo looks over, noticing with surprise the unknown number trying to call Romy via their phone. She asks, hesitantly, "Are you... going to answer that?"

The page composition has Boone, Echo and Romy's faces stacked in profile on one side, while the compass man looks down at them thoughtfully from the other side. Echo: "Of COURSE we know where we're going! We're looking for Alex. Any idea where he's gone?" "Alex, hm? Looking for him before you look for yourselves? Que triste indeed." He beams condescendingly with his hands on his hips, while Echo continues digging at him. "... look. It's a straight-forward request. Are you gonna help us out or not?" The compass man starts wiggling his noodle arms in a playful and crazed manner bordering on uncanny. "Si, si. I think I can show you a way. But first... a game we must play!" Echo forces a sheepish smile. "... must we?"

Okay. Just point us in the right direction, 'O Valiant One." Compass man, in excited shock: "The right... DIRECTION?" He then begins to dance and sway, revealing several signs and cave entrances behind him, while his purple bow tie extends into a scarf with arrows pointed at the ends. "Why - there's SO MANY WAYS to choose from! But none of you nincompoops seem to know where you're going. So very lost, it seems! !Que triste!"

Romy's heart goes cold, as they look down at the compass and shiver. "Inanimate objects... speaking to me..." They put their paws to their head in full-blown panic, while the other three look on, mildly confused. "AGAIN?!" Romy puts their paws over their eyes, remembering back to their nightmare in the first book with the anthropomorphic lamp and furniture that bullied them before. "Please don't tell me you're related to the lamp..." The compass gets up, now more anthropomorphized himself, the necklace of the compass now branching into a full body with arms and toony glove hands, which he uses to fix a purple bowtie around his neck. "Lamp? Pah. !Que insultante! You think I'm anything like that bobo?" He leans backward and gives his hand a wave. "I'm just here to have a little fun." He wraps an arm around Boone's neck and gets up close and personal with his face, to which Boone looks away. "You do like fun, don't you?" Boone: "Not when you say it like THAT." "Aha. !Si! El macho cabrio agrees with me." Boone blushes. "El macho? Mmm." The compass, aggravated and flailing his arms: "!Ey! !Enfocar! Let's stay on track!!!"

Romy: 'This CAN'T be happening.' Furniture: "... an anxious wreck... she's always been better off alone..." Romy shivers and looks around in a paranoid state, tears streaming down her face. 'This isn't real, this is just -' They suddenly come to a realization, their eyes widening. 'A NIGHTMARE.'
