I like this view better, from the north-northeast. I think the top of the Ogallala is marked by the change to less dissected interfluves dropping less steeply toward the valley. #rayshader

Three dimensional perspective view from a large river valley up highly dissected slopes toward a high tableland. The dissection increases and slopes are steeper starting about 3/5 of the way up.

Canyons eroded in thick loess and underlying Pliocene gravels and Ogallala Group, dropping from a high tableland into the North Platte valley west of Ogallala, Nebraska. View northeast in the area of Dankworth Canyon; shadows simulated for 9AM this morning using #rayshader.

Perspective view from a tableland into a highly dissected area with many canyons and side gullies toward a flat river valley in the distance.

People think it's really easy to make a rotating 3D map in R nowadays, but you don't see the hours of practice that #rayshader had to put in behind the scenes to make it look that effortless.

(from my upcoming rayshader 1.0 release blog post😀)

Ahh, that's better! Nice, clean 3D ggplots with no texture bleeding (because those are real 3D polygons, automatically transformed into the 3D coordinate system of the underlying ggplot!)

us_states,
data_column_top = "total_pop_15",
color = "height"
)

Excited to be at #positconf this year! I'm not giving a talk, but find me to talk about realistic geospatial visualization with #rayshader, lots of cool new improvements to 3D rendering and animation in #RStats with #rayrender, and enhancing {targets} workflows with #tarborist! 👋

View from the opposite direction, same time and date. Look at how nicely it renders those gullies and small dams in the lower left! I could spend a lot of time on this, but I also want to get out to this area again in October. #rayshader

Three dimensional view of a landscape with ridges and valleys early on a January morning so the sun angle is low. Some gullies and small dams are brought out very nicely.

Visualization of a southern Driftless Area at 8AM on January 1. View to the southwest. Created with #rayshader using render_highquality and skymodel_r. Mostly for my own enjoyment now, but I could make some of these to talk about slope aspect and microclimate, couldn't I?

Three dimensional visualization of a landscape with ridges and valleys, and with the morning sun at a low angle casting long shadows.

Finally: #rayshader will soon have the beautiful sunsets made in #RStats I've always dreamed of, along an actual sense of scale for your landscapes, thanks to some big updates I'm pushing to #rayrender and #skymodelr 😀

You can ask me more in Houston at #positconf 👋

Rayshader: now a realistic "flying through clouds" dream simulator in R with rayrender's new volume rendering! All I need to add now are whooshing air sounds and a faceless clown who slowly chases you throughout the scene—gaining, always gaining.
