Radio #ImageoftheWeek

Meet NGC 253, aka the Sculptor Galaxy! 🌌 At ~11.5 million light-years from Earth, it is one of the closest starburst galaxies to the Milky Way. Starburst galaxies transmute gas into new stars up to 1,000 times faster than typical spiral galaxies!

A red region represents the lower density carbon monoxide (CO) gas surrounding higher density star-forming regions (stellar nurseries) in yellow.A grid of 9 images of starburst galaxy NGC 253 with different colors representing different molecular species. In order: molecular gas (blue), shocked regions (red), relatively high-density regions (orange), young starbursts (yellow), developed starbursts (magenta), and molecular gas affected by cosmic-ray ionization (cyan).Schematic image of the center of starburst galaxy NGC 253. Last month, I spoke with Duncan Lorimer, discoverer of fast radio bursts (FRBs), about FRBs and the Wow! Signal. In 2027, we’ll celebrate three major milestones in #RadioAstronomy: 60 years of pulsars, 50 years of the Wow! Signal, and 20 years of FRBs! 📡

What’s new with the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA)? 📡

We’ve recently reached some milestones for “first fringes” – meaning successful correlation, combining signals from 2+ separate antennas.

You’re looking at the radio sky as seen by the Big Ear telescope in August 15, 1977. The bright structure near 18 hours in right ascension is the plane of our Galaxy. Keep going between 19 and 20 hours; the short red line to the left is the Wow! Signal. #AreciboWow #RadioAstronomy

🚨 ALMA Ambassadors (Cycle 14, 2027) application deadline approaching! 🚨

Applications are due October 2, 2026. The #ALMA Ambassadors program provides training and funding to early career researchers interested in sharing their ALMA/interferometry expertise at their own institutions.

Here's a rendered concept for the Titan Observatory site. The small dishes are replicas of the radio telescope currently connected to the network. The larger 10m is the one we still need funding to purchase.

As part of a collaboration between PhD students, these observations were taken with Murriyang (CSIRO Parkes radio telescope) and verified with South Africa's MeerKAT.

Plot with two vertical tiles, each tile representing data from Parkes and the MeerKAT telescope. On the x-axis is pulse phase and on the y-axis is time. Both telescopes report the profile change event features in unison.Three-panel image. Two small square panels on the left side show the eigenprofile of the principal component for two telescopes. It features a sharp narrow peak and two smaller narrow troughs on either side. The larger third panel on the right plots the data points as a function of time on the x-axis and normalised PC score on y-axis. The curves start with a gradual recovery then suddenly dip before slowly recovery back exponentially too.

J0437 is the brightest and closest MSP to Earth.

Both events altered the same profile components in the same way and followed a similar evolution over time, exhibiting frequency dependence and affecting polarisations.

Three columns are shaded pink, grey and purple, indicating the different regions of the profile that were affected by the profile change.Plot with two tiles showing pulse phase on x-axis and polarisation positin angle on y-axis. Plotted are the PA of the template and three dates, showing the onset date shifting the PAs in the specific region of the profile.

Are millisecond Pulsars, nature's cosmic clocks, as stable as we once thought?

A new study by @rami.spaceaustralia.com has reported the discovery of two consecutive profile change events on PSR J0437-4715.
