On #ThisDayInHistory in 1911, the #WuchangUprising began in #Hubei, #China. The armed revolt against the #Qing state came as a surprise, but its success led #SunYatSen et al. to call on other provinces to secede and form the #RepublicOfChina in what became the #XinhaiRevolution.

Imperial Dragon glazed ceramic medallion, found on a red wall of the Forbidden City, Beijing, China. Strictly a symbol of imperial ruler, it symbolizes wealth, power & the earth. Non imperials caught using the symbol were severely penalized.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1898, the #DowagerEmpress #Cixi staged a coup in #China that ended the transformative policies of the #HundredDaysReform. Her #TongzhiRestoration was partly #reactionary and limited the scope for change to areas like the military. The #Qing fell in 1911.
