Something important I need people to know is that the reason I was a Puritan for so long is because let me be honest some of you guys are just kind of assholes and never bothered to like actually explain why age play isn't bad in a way that wasn't acting like I'm stupid

There were objections to mandated forms, but the prayer book was generally not the concern. Governor John Winthrop's "a city upon a hill" cast a vision for #prayer, meditation, and practicing grace, "knit together by this bond of love." #puritan

Most #puritan settlers of the #Massachusetts Bay Colony did not consider themselves separatists, and Morning and Evening #Prayer were a tradition consistent with Scripture and church history.

Puritan vicar William Whately: search any town and most households are stuck fast in the mire of want. Say that now and people sniff for an agenda. His: pity for families caught in the usurer's wax, by others' scheming or their own folly.

How can you show mercy in the market?

Right, in white text, the quotation: "Run throughout an whole Town and Country, inquire into all the households, and search into all the estates of the greater number, and you shall find them broken, encumbered, low, dejected, and even sticking fast in the mud and mire of want and penurie."

Puritan John Bunyan: always selling for as much as you can get isn't done with an eye to God's glory. He saw the cruelty in hard bargains. Some cite "2,000 years of church teaching" minus this bit. Others assume the Reformed never had any decency to cite.

Robert Bolton, Puritan minister, called charity bought by evicting the poor "blood money" — the church should shun the giver, not launder the gift. Now, too often today, shunning's reserved for whoever criticizes the giver.

Portrait of Puritan minister Robert Bolton (1572–1631) beside a quotation from his "The Saint's Self-Enriching Examination," decrying landlords who enclose land, drive the poor from their homes, and then offer charity as blood money bought "by oppression, extortion or usury, or by grinding the face of the fatherless."

Lloyd Bowen @lloydbowen.bsky.social @cardiffuni.bsky.social on 'Revisiting the Origins of the ‘Roundhead’ in 1641'

#Terminology #Debate #Drama #Pamphlets #Theatre #Puritan #Print 17thc📜🗃️

www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

This article revisits the contested origins of the political label ‘Roundhead’ during the English Revolution, challenging the conventional view that the term originated spontaneously during the Westminster tumults of December 1641. While historians have generally relied upon John Rushworth’s later account of David Hyde denouncing parliamentary crowds as ‘round-headed dogs’, this study demonstrates that the contemporary evidence is more ambiguous. It explores alternative formulations, particularly Hyde’s reported insult ‘Ram-headed rogues’, and situates both terms within a wider culture of anti-Puritan satire, theatrical caricature, and political mockery. Drawing upon pamphlets, dramatic literature, manuscript annotations, and print culture, the article argues that ‘Roundhead’ may already have circulated before December 1641, notably in Richard Brathwaite’s Mercurius Britannicus. The article therefore proposes a more complex genealogy for the term, showing how political identities emerged through the interaction of print, performance, satire, and popular mobilization rather than through a single moment of invention.
