New York City voters will decide on five proposed changes to the City Charter in the November 3, 2026 election. They cover public-space permissions, city contracting, street projects and city property, building permits, and financial reserves. Each question is a separate yes-or-no decision—not an all-or-nothing package. [haitiantimes](https://haitiantimes.com/2026/09/26/nyc-5-ballot-proposals-election-day-2026/)

The image you shared is **advocacy**: it urges a “yes” vote on all five. It identifies the general subjects, but leaves out some important changes to public hearings and City Council oversight. Here is a more neutral explanation based on the city’s published ballot questions and the commission’s report. [nyc](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/charter/html/coge-adopted-final-report-2026.html)

## 1. Public-space approvals

### What would change?
This proposal would simplify permissions to use public streets and sidewalks for features such as accessibility ramps, planters, benches, and outdoor cafés. These permissions are called “revocable consents”—the city can withdraw them. [nyc](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/charter/html/coge-adopted-final-report-2026.html)

The amendment would:
- Remove mandatory public hearings, while retaining opportunities for community input.
- Remove the City Council’s power to disapprove sidewalk-café applications.
- Combine sidewalk and roadway outdoor-dining applications into a single process and modernize public-notice requirements. [nyc](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/charter/html/coge-adopted-final-report-2026.html)

### What do yes and no mean?
- Yes: Adopt the streamlined approval process.
- No: Keep the existing process, including mandatory hearings and Council review of sidewalk cafés. [nyc](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/charter/downloads/pdf/2026/appendix_a_poposed_ballot_questions_20260723.pdf)

### What should voters weigh?
The intended benefit is faster, less expensive approvals for businesses and property owners. The tradeoff is that …

Because the tiny stuff matters.

A one-person-wide path, a shop facing a junction, a bridge over a nala, a cluster of shared open space, these things can explain how a neighborhood works better than a clean zoning diagram ever could.

Actually it’s a positive that our regional cities around Sydney - Newcastle. Wollongong & Gosford - strengthening their centres & increasing their populations in compact form.
Need better design - only Newcastle bringing quality buildings.
Need major improvements in #publicspace & facilities

Found this on reddit 'r/Dogfree' and I agree.

#dogs #doglovers #dogfree #dogculture #publicsafety #publicspace #socialcontract #dogowners #consent

Screenshot of a Reddit post in the r/Dogfree subreddit, under the "Dog Culture" flair. The title reads: "It's a crime when I do it but not when Fido does?" The post text reads:

"If I'm passing you on the sidewalk and I lunge toward you from striking distance with a raised fist, that's assault, even if I don't touch you. If a dog lunges toward me barking and snarling, it's somehow totally fine as long as it doesn't bite.

If you're walking in the park and I run up to you and deliberately put my hands or face against your body without your consent, that's battery. If a dog does it, he's just a curious good boy.

If you're out for a jog or a bike ride and I charge directly after you screaming, that's assault even if I never catch you. If a dog charges after you barking and snarling, he's just being playful.

If I deliberately shove my face into your crotch without your consent, that's battery at the least (sexual assault depends on intent). If a dog does it, no big deal, that's just what they do.

My aunt, who was actually a professional hunting dog trainer, had a great line for me: A dog has to be a citizen.

What she meant was that it was unreasonable for an owner to let their dog impose on anyone else in a way that we would not allow a human to. Obviously a dog isn't legally or morally responsible for its behavior in the way a human is. That's the owner's responsibility. But I shouldn't have to be threatened, chased, touched, jumped on, sniffed, or otherwise forced to interact with somebody else's animal because the owner has decided that behavior that would be completely unacceptable from another person is harmless when their dog does it.

I usually find human-dog comparisons gross ("fur baby" - fucking disgusting), but I appreciated the analogy."
