When a nonprofit is officially designated or suspended as a terrorist or terrorist-supporting organization under U.S. law (such as through federal anti-terrorism statutes or Internal Revenue Code Section 501(p)), several severe consequences occur automatically:
• Suspension of Tax-Exempt Status: The organization's tax-exempt status is automatically suspended starting on the date of the designation. It must begin paying corporate income taxes, and it is placed on an official IRS public list of suspended entities (such as IRS Publication 5588).
• Loss of Charitable Deductions: Donors can no longer claim tax deductions for any contributions made to the organization.
• Asset Freezing and Blocking: Federal law (including the USA PATRIOT Act and sanctions enforced by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control) makes it illegal for anyone to provide material support or resources to the group, and financial institutions are required to freeze or block the organization's funds and accounts.
• Criminal and Civil Penalties: Providing material support to a designated terrorist group is a federal crime, exposing leaders, staff, or major contributors to criminal prosecution, heavy fines, or imprisonment.
• Operational "Death Spiral": Beyond direct legal and financial blocks, the public stigma, loss of donor confidence, bank disengagement, and inability to maintain operations typically force the organization to shut down.
