Daryil: "It's not about that. If Taun hasn't told her already, she needs to know what I've discovered."

Peafowl: "If you think my Lady will willingly speak to you after LAST TIME..."

Nact'Larn Herself suddenly pushes in

Nact'Larn: "I will speak with Daryil. He UNDERSTANDS lust."

Daryil: "It's true... we both like our men."

It's easy to forget Jakob and Daxxon are an item, because Jakob is usually in the thick of things and very busy.

Jakob and Daxxon lie together on a couch in the Jayhawk Cybernetics base. They are both wearing black latex catsuits.

Jakob: "...And that's it. I'm hoping we can get it fixed quickly, but in the meantime I need to visit Fairwater. Want to come too?"

Daxxon: "Is it safe...? I mean, are WE likely to get bounties as well?"

Jakob: "So far it seems to be adventurers only. I THINK we're safe..."

At that moment the door opens and Daryil waltzes in, ruining the mood and annoying Jakob no end

Daryil: "Oooh! Catsuits! Is it sexy-time...?"

Both: "...YES."

Daryil: "SWEET! Well, when you're done, I hear you're going to Fairwater. I need to go too. Want a lift...?"

Jakob tries to get a feel for what may be going wrong with Adventurenet.

Jakob: "These bounties... are they paid out? Is money actually changing hands?"
Steve: "Yes, it's held in escrow."

R-ALF: "Escrow?"
Olaf: "The guild wants to be sure they'll be paid, but the client wants to be sure we won't just run off with the money. So a third party, usually a bank, holds the payment."

Jakob: "Some moron put a bounty on his friend for shits and giggles. For a million gold dollars, I think it was."

Jakob: "Said friend lost their head in short order, and of course the prankster didn't have that kind of money in the first place."

Jakob: "He'd not only defrauded the guild and broke contract, but he'd also tricked them into murdering an innocent man. So he was taken to the back room, and hanged like a rogue adventurer. Guilds take things like that VERY seriously."

Jakob: "So we rapidly added support for escrow. That stopped the pranks, as the average guy on the street has to pay upfront for bounty they take out. This... it looks equally serious. I'd better go visit the King."

Xerian and Quirk discuss how they can sabotage the ship's cloaking device.

Xerian: "So, how long will it take you to learn about the cloaking device systems?"
Quirk: "There is a catch. Two, really."

Quirk: "Firstly, since the interesting stuff is on a separate network, we'll need to go to a specific location to access the appropriate data jack. So we'll risk detection just by going there. Hopefully, we'll only encounter a few patrol robots, if we're lucky."

Quirk: "Secondly, while I'm actually hacking the ship, I'll be in a trance-like state. So far I've deliberately stuck to easy targets or bailed out if I can't break through the defences quickly. But finding out about an entire topic like this... that will take time."

Lautrec: "You'll need us to guard you. Xerian won't be much good in a tussle, but he CAN at least warn you while I deal with our enemies, or at least hold them o-"

A blue flash appears behind Xerian, and they all stare at it.

Quirk: "What the..."

When the flash has dissipated, they find Niall lying in a heap on the floor.

Steve: "Right. The next order of business is AdventureNet. Someone's apparently hacked into it, and is now setting up fake bounties on our adventurers."

Jakob: "I see. Hence my invitation here today."
Olaf: "Quite. Jayhawk won the tender to write and maintain it. That makes AdventureNet YOUR puppy, and you need to ensure it hasn't gone rabid."

Steve: "Several people have lost their heads. Some slain for the bounty, others executed for murdering their fellows."

Jakob covers his eyes with gloved hands in despair

Jakob: "Shit, shit, SHIT!"
Jakob: "Maybe we should shut it down for maintenance until we fix the problem?"

Daniel: "Fairwater considered that, but it would also prevent us from bringing the culprit to justice."

Josh: "Worse, they'd know we were on to them and switch tactics. He recommended warning the guildmasters privately, while we quietly investigate the problem."

Xerian: "But THAT doesn't make sense either! Surely they'd have proofed it against their OWN side's hacking tools, right...?"
Quirk: "You'd THINK so, wouldn't...?"

Quirk: "Imagine if you will... Or if you CAN... that's you're an insane tyrant dedicated to wiping out inferior members of the protogen race to help 'purify' it."

Quirk: "You're going to find out, that after eliminating or imprisoning the deviants who don't fit your ideals, that you won't have a great time maintaining technological superiority, because it turns out the folks who are best at that kind of thing tend to be a bit ODD. Non-conforming."

Quirk: "And it gets worse, because if someone DOES spot a problem in that environment, reporting it risks being singled out as a troublemaker and demoted or executed."
Quirk: "When all your engineers are too afraid to look for security holes, the data network is going to start resembling a sieve."

Lautrec: "That tracks. We cyberjags were originally designed by a totalitarian regime. I've heard stories from older brothers who lived under that system."

Lautrec: "It was BRUTAL, and technology evolved slowly unless it was for a specific aim, like making a bunch of disposable feline guards to patrol a military base."

Back in the guildhall, Aisha is drinking some ale before moving on. Suddenly there is a loud 'clunk' and a large bag of coin lands on her table.

Hark: "Hey, DeCabre... this is for you."

Aisha: "What would that be fore, amiga? I kinda let the bounty target go, if you recall..."

Hark: "Yeah... you saved his life, in fact. And you helped us bring down most of the REAL criminals."

Hark: "I think that on behalf of my guild, you deserve compensation for that lost bounty, just as we originally agreed."

Julei: "I did, but that's ancient history. We are allies of Daryil, hand-picked by him for this mission, and he can vouch for us."

Forester: "I'll have to confirm that."

Josh: "Are you REALLY a forester? You sound more like a customs and immigration official at an airport."

Forester: "I was a student, okay...? I needed the money."

Quirk: "We don't want to end up disabling the life support! But, I MAY be able to extract this information."
Xerian: "Please... don't T-TORTURE anyone!"

Quirk: "Actually, I intend to hack into the ship's computers. No point in making trouble if I can get what I need some other way. Also, people tend to lie under torture."

Xerian: "If this ship was designed by your lot, how come you're so good at breaking into it? Are you a hacking expert?"

Quirk: "It's included in the combat suite on my implants. They're not just for killing people opposed to the Emperor, there's full tooling for hacking and electronic warfare."

Quirk: "Some of the ship's systems ARE hardened, but I've been breaking into things almost from day one."

Aisha: "Then there were the crashes as the adventuring market collapsed. I was out of work, but not for long. I used to be a skilled healer... Now, with the power of the Creature I could do that even better. It helped take the sting out of it."

Aisha: "And that is that. I am Aisha DeCabre, once known as The Risen. If you will have me as a probationary adventurer, I will be proud to offer my services. But I can look elsewhere if you prefer."
