#PPOD: Galaxies warp, stretch, and multiply across this view from NASA’s JWST. The golden galaxies belong to the massive galaxy cluster MACS J0454.1-0300, seen as it was about 8 billion years ago. The cluster’s enormous gravity bends spacetime and distorts light... 🧪 🔭

A massive galaxy cluster, made of many golden elliptical galaxies with the largest, brightest one in the centre. Heavily distorted orange galaxies appear all around the cluster, the largest concentrated in a large arc around the cluster's centre; these are images of very distant galaxies, created by gravitational lensing. A few galaxies are large and bluish-white in colour; bright, nearby stars are the same colour.

#PPOD: ESA’s Smile mission has captured its first ultraviolet image of Earth’s northern aurora, revealing the glowing oval during an auroral substorm. Smile’s Ultraviolet Imager captured the image, observing ultraviolet light produced when energetic particles... 🧪 🔭

A square blue image, with a little over half of Earth taking up most of the image. Earth looks like how we see the Moon when it is waxing or waning at just over a half-Moon. Because this is an ultraviolet image, Earth does not appear in its usual colours, but is light blue with a white ring. This ring is about a third of the size of the face of Earth that we see, and is quite swirly, like clouds or dye being mixed with water. The background of the image is dark blue, with some tiny white dots: these are stars.

#PPOD: How small can something form like a star?

JWST has found brown dwarfs in IC 348 with only about twice Jupiter’s mass—the least massive brown dwarfs known. Their existence challenges models of how stars and brown dwarfs form. 🧪 🔭

A star-forming region. It is blanketed in thick clouds of gas and dust, millions of kilometres across, that form swirling patterns. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the centre of the scene. Each is crowned with six long points created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors. In the upper right, a couple of hidden stars blast out long, glowing jets of material.

#PPOD: Roman has opened its eyes!

These fuzzy rings are the first photons of starlight captured by the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope’s 300-megapixel Wide Field Instrument.

And yes, they’re supposed to look like that—for now. 🧪 🔭

This test image captures the very first photons of starlight to reach the Wide Field Instrument on NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Roman’s primary science instrument has opened its eyes to the universe for the first time, revealing a sea of out-of-focus stars, each spread out over many thousands of pixels. The image, which zooms into one detector and zooms again to a single star in the insets, offers a baseline the Roman team will work from to align the telescope’s optics and tune the focus.
