summary: Eight years ago, Thomas Pendleton stepped onto St. Clement, a barren crag of rock jutting from the icy waves several hundred kilometers off the northwest coast of Ireland. He's been the sole human resident ever since, tasked with maintaining the St. Clement Lighthouse, the only beacon in the frigid North Atlantic nights. Through the rain, the wind, and the endless crashing waves, Pendleton lives a peaceful, monotonous, and above all, solitary life far away from bloodstains on cobblestones and a drafty East London flat.

Until, that is, a half-drowned stranger washes ashore in a damaged lifeboat, carrying little more than the clothes on his back and bringing with him the most ferocious storm that Pendleton has ever faced.

(AKA: Pendleton is a hermit lighthouse keeper and Baxter shows up on his island without quite knowing how he got there.)
