Plot Hook #10: Plot Hook #10: The Dragon Stealing Corpses Is Keeping the Valley’s Dead From Waking. A young white dragon has begun raiding funeral processions throughout the valley. It scatters mourners, seizes the bodies, and carries them into the mountains. Two guards have already died trying to stop it, and the local villages are gathering coin for anyone willing to kill the beast.

The dragon is not eating the dead. Weeks ago, a landslide opened an ancient barrow beneath the valley cemetery, and something within it now causes newly buried corpses to rise. The dragon discovered this when several undead wandered into its territory. Since then, it has been stealing bodies before they can be interred and freezing them deep inside its lair.

Killing the dragon ends the raids, but leaves the valley with its original problem and dozens of preserved corpses beginning to thaw. The party could hunt the source beneath the cemetery, arrange safer burials elsewhere, or somehow persuade grieving families that the creature desecrating their funerals has also been protecting them.

Plot Hook #9: Plot Hook #9: The Kobolds Have Turned the Dragon’s Hoard into a Bank. For years, the kobolds serving an ancient dragon have quietly loaned out pieces of its hoard. Their reasoning was impeccable: a sleeping dragon does nothing with gold, while merchants pay interest. By returning more treasure than they borrowed, the kobolds have actually enlarged the hoard and built the region’s most discreet lending operation.

Then the dragon wakes six months early and asks for a particular jeweled crown. It is currently being used as collateral three kingdoms away.

The kobolds need someone capable of recovering it without causing a panic among their borrowers. Unfortunately, rumors of the dragon’s awakening have already started a run on the bank. The party might retrieve the crown, help the kobolds conceal the accounting scheme, or discover that the dragon understands compound interest perfectly well and is mostly furious that nobody offered it a controlling share.

MEMO:

I can’t believe this. A bet I made with a guy 20 years ago has come due and I’m obligated to have a Wild West style duel all the way over in Medora. I thought for sure he’d be dead by now.

Plot Hook #8: Plot Hook #8: A Staircase Descends from the Forest Floor into Open Sky, and Someone Below Is Building Upward. Hunters have found a stone staircase in a forest clearing. It descends through the earth for six steps—then continues into bright, cloud-filled sky, as though the ground were merely a ceiling. Birds can be seen circling far below. At night, distant lanterns move among impossible towers hanging beneath the world.

The staircase was only six steps long when discovered. Now it has nine. Fresh mortar appears each morning, and hammering can sometimes be heard from below.

Those brave enough to descend can reach a strange settlement built on the other side, whose inhabitants insist they did not create the passage. They believe people from “above” are extending it toward them.

The party could investigate from either end, try to halt the construction, or allow the stairways to meet. Whatever is building between the two worlds may be connecting them deliberately—and neither side knows what it expects to cross.

Plot Hook #7: Plot Hook #7: Killing the Dragon Was Easy; Surviving the Gold It Hoarded May Be Harder. For generations, an ancient dragon’s hoard quietly removed enormous amounts of gold from circulation. Merchants hated the lost wealth, but the scarcity kept the realm’s coin unusually stable. Now the dragon is dead, its treasure has been divided among mercenaries, nobles, temples, and merchants—and thousands of long-hidden coins are flooding back into the economy.

Prices are climbing faster than wages. Debtors are celebrating while lenders face ruin, neighboring kingdoms are refusing the realm’s currency, and several factions are buying treasure simply to lock it away again.

The party may be hired to recover scattered portions of the hoard, protect those suddenly enriched by it, or help establish a new source of monetary stability. Whether the old rulers understood the dragon’s economic role—or even protected it deliberately—remains for the DM to decide.
