The good news: vaccination boosted neutralizing responses against many currently circulating variants, including the emerging saltation variant PJ.2.1
The less good news: neutralizing antibodies against BA.3.2 showed the weakest boost.

New sequences from Germany π©πͺ, all collected in September. No PJ.2.1 - so far. #PJ21
4 out of 50 new sequences from Syracuse, NY, USA, are PJ.2.1 #PJ21
Patients are in age groups 0-9 and 65+
One new PJ.2.1 from Spain πͺπΈ
The sample was collected from a one-month-old, non-hospitalized male in Vitoria-Gasteiz, northern Spain.
Among 90 newly submitted sequences - many collected in September - only one was PJ.2.1. Its spread may therefore be less robust than initially persumed. #PJ21
New PJ.2.1 sequences from Spain πͺπΈ
Roughly 9% of sequences from Spain collected in September are PJ.2.1
Roughly 15% of sequences from Spain submitted since September 15 are PJ.2.1 #PJ21
New PJ.2.1 sequences from Spain πͺπΈ
Roughly 7% of sequences from Spain collected in September are PJ.2.1

π§ͺ6 new PJ.2.1 sequences from Spain πͺπΈ
Most patients were aged 55+, as expected. Two were hospitalized.

PJ.2.1 is likely circulating more broadly, but only 6 of 141 samples were PJ.2.1, suggesting it is not yet dominant.
These developments underscore the importance of maintaining at least a baseline level of genomic surveillance. #PJ21
4/4 Most PJ.2.1 detections in Spain so far have been reported in older adults, in agreement with data from Canada and the US. Let's see whether this pattern continues as more cases are identified. #PJ21
It is noteworthy that the initial PJ.2.1 sequences were almost exclusively obtained from patients in the above 65 years age group.
Some of the recent sequences were collected from younger individuals.
Need to monitor this development. #PJ21
Two new PJ.2.1 sequences today, one from Maryland, USA πΊπΈ, and one from Catalunya, Spain πͺπΈ. #PJ21
