I've been obsessed with Massachusetts's pine barrens recently. It's such a strangely beautiful place! The sandy dunes provide a unique inland habitat for fire-adapted species rich in insects and birds like whip-poor-wills.

Did you know Shamong almost became Indian Mills? The name Shamong comes from the Lenape and is traditionally translated as “place of the horn.” In 1992, residents even voted on changing the township’s name!
