About half the oxygen you breathe was made by phytoplankton. A year of them from orbit, Sept 2025 to Sept 2026, on a map where every ocean is one body of water. Watch the polar night swallow each pole in turn.

Happy World Habitat Day 🧊

Even sea ice can provide valuable living space, particularly for the masses of diatoms growing underneath (hence the yellow stains). Krill will then feed on these microalgae, the same krill that whales often feast on in polar waters.

Satellite chlorophyll may reveal only a fraction of daily #phytoplankton biomass extremes. Modelling shows that missing observations and differences between surface chlorophyll and deeper biomass both limit what can be detected from space. doi.org/rrt7

Prochlorococcus cyanobacteria form biofilms on particles & dynamically transition between free-living and attached states with significantly different physiology

That impacts carbon release, thus suggesting a role in carbon export to the deep sea

Very much enjoyed this year's joint #nsogfö2026 conference hosted by @nordicoikos.bsky.social and @gfoesoc.bsky.social in beautiful Odense, Denmark!

Loved coming together to talk about #phytoplankton and #bacteria in a multifactorial and variable world!
