@djmikev.bsky.socialToday would be Lennon's 86th birthday. One of my youngest and still potent memories is how upset my parents were when he was murdered. I remember watching the news with them. RIP John.

@nicestguyonbsky.bsky.socialOne of my favorite quotes that I use to motivate myself to do stressful things that I find physically and/or mentally challenging:
"Free your mind and your ass will follow"
...then I listen to music that makes me smile.

@jojjenito.bsky.socialDr Funkenstein leaving Earth in his Mothership in Houston 1977. Gotta point out the women of #PFunk here: Jeanette Washington, Dawn Silva, and especially Lynn Mabry that takes the performance to another level. Mabry later performed with Talking Heads in "Stop Making Sense". #Parliament #Funkadelic

@analgesicsleep.bsky.socialOriginally a conceptual element of their music it became a physical prop that was used in Parliament-Funkadelic live concerts from the 1970s into the 1990s. As of 2021 a replica resides in the Oakland Museum of California

@analgesicsleep.bsky.socialParliament Funkadelic began life as the 1950s New Jersey-based Doo-Wop group The Parliaments and their backing band who by the late 1960s became known as Funkadelic due to a legal dispute with their record label shortly after that they became the #PFunk we know today

@analgesicsleep.bsky.socialFirst up we have Parliament Funkadelic live from The Summit in Houston, Texas in 1976 (youtu.be/r5aHD5ruSZ0?...) Sorry about the video quality. The audio and, of course, The vibes remain pretty immaculate to make up for it

@grandaha.bsky.socialEveryone traces P-Funk back to James Brown's "Sex Machine," and yes, that groove is in the DNA. But the real surprise is how much jazz fed the swamp: Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" is as much an ancestor as anything Sly cut. #ParliamentFunkadelic #Funk #PFunk #MusicArchaeology #MusicHistory
@grandaha.bsky.socialP-Funk never sang a chorus. On "Give Up the Funk," "we want the funk" hits the downbeat like a snare, "gotta have that funk" fills where a hi-hat would go. The vocal group is the drum kit. #ParliamentFunkadelic #Funk #PFunk #Soul #MusicArchaeology #MusicHistory
