- WHEN THE BLACKBIRD SINGS AGAIN - I dedicate the painting ‘When the blackbird sings again’ to my father. I began work on the canvas just before he fell ill and passed away not long afterwards. The following year, I picked up my brushes again and completed it in the summer. I found the inspiration for this painting in the song of the blackbird on those beautiful summer evenings. Sitting in the garden, or in my studio looking out at the top of a pine tree, I would watch the spot where he displayed his singing talents. Whenever I could, I would take the time to listen to him. I always found it magical. The man standing under the tree in the painting, listening, is me. When I put the painting back on my easel a few months after my father’s death to finish it, something struck me. Since his death, not a single blackbird had been heard. Not in the spring, nor in the summer. The spot where the blackbird used to sing remained empty all that time. I had to manage without its comforting song, just as I had to manage without my conversations with my father. Was that a coincidence? Who can tell? It did, however, give me the title for this painting: ‘When the blackbird sings again’. Because one day it will sing again, and then I shall listen yet again.
