A small bird perched on the top of a green acacia shrub, facing left, with warm sandy-brown upperparts streaked darker, a plain pale buff-grey head and face, whitish underparts, a small dark conical bill, and a dark reddish eye, set against a softly blurred blue- grey and green background.

Text on card: The Northern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus) is a sociable bird found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, from open woodland and savannah to villages, gardens and farmland. Its grey head, chestnut-brown back and pale underparts give it a subtle but distinctive appearance, with males and females looking much alike. Often seen hopping along the ground in pairs or small flocks, it feeds mainly on seeds and grain, supplementing its diet with insects. A familiar neighbour in many communities, it readily nests in cavities in trees and buildings.
