It's never not a good time to review the Paradox of Tolerance.

Any society that is 100% permissive of all ideas, ideologies, creeds, and perspectives will be co-opted by the intolerant.

..of dangerous thinking is what makes a nation of people start committing genocidal acts against another group of people, simply because they feel entitled to everything they deemed theirs.

So now more than ever the teachings of the #ParadoxOfTolerance by #KarlPopper cannot be over shared!

THE PARADOX OF TOLERANCE
BY PHILOSOPHER KARL POPPER*
SHOULD A TOLERANT
SOCIETY TOLERATE INTELORANCE?

ANY MOVEMENT THAT PREACHES INTOLERANCE AND PERSECUTION MUST BE OUTSIDE OF THE LAW.
AS PARADOXICAL AS IT MAY SEEM, DEFENDING TOLERANCE...
...REQUIRES TO NOT TOLERATE THE INTOLERANT.

PICTOLINE. COMThe Core Argument
Popper argued that to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be prepared to be intolerant of intolerance. However, his full argument is often misunderstood or oversimplified online.
Popper laid out specific conditions for when society should suppress intolerant ideas:
• As a last resort: Popper did not recommend immediately suppressing intolerant philosophies. He argued that society should first counter them with rational argument and public opinion.
• When reason is abandoned:
Suppression is only justified when the intolerant refuse to engage in rational debate, forbid their followers from listening to arguments, and answer arguments with violence or deceptive propaganda. Why It Resonates Today
The paradox is frequently cited in debates surrounding:
• Content moderation: Balancing free expression against hate speech and radicalization on social media platforms.
• Democratic resilience: How democracies should handle political movements or figures that use democratic systems to gain power with the intent of dismantling democratic institutions.
• Pluralism: Defining the boundaries of multicultural coexistence when certain group beliefs reject the rights of others. In short, the paradox serves as a warning that survival requires boundaries. A society that refuses to defend its own foundational tolerance against those actively trying to destroy it will eventually cease to be tolerant.

Axioms of the channel (and everything else I do online).

Had occasion to correct myself recently (thanks HummyR!) so I thought it would be a good time to put these axioms up where you can also read them. :)

The time has come to debate reinstating capital punishment for treason in Canada. There are people in this country openly and actively working with foreign countries to break us apart. #cdnpoli. #paradoxoftolerance

@tante Those of us who are part of FOSS/FLOSS, even only as users, must not tolerate fascism because if we do, it will destroy us.

A one-page cartoon titled, "The Paradox of Tolerance, by Philosopher Karl Popper."

The first panel starts with the words "Should a tolerant society tolerate intolerance?" Next are two white people, looking perhaps early 20th century European, with a single word balloon that has a swastika encased in a red circle with a line through it. Next is a man with a swastika on his forehead and shirt, holding a torch, saying, "You want more tolerance? Respect my ideas!" Last, more text says, "The answer is 'No'." (The torch is a reference to the Berlin Olympics, hosted by the then Nazi German government.)

The second panel starts with "When we extend tolerance to those who are openly tolerant..." and show a man dressed in a Prussian Imperial uniform saying, "Let's give them a chance!" next to a picture of a man in a Nazi uniform, next to a Nazi eagle with swastika. Last, is Hitler in silhouette "heiling" a crowd of Nazis, with the words, "... the tolerant ones end up being destroyed. And tolerance with them."

The third and final panel says, "Any movement that preaches intolerance and persecution must be outside of the law," over an image of a giant boot kicking Hilter in the butt (ha ha, fuck you, Adolf!), and then a picture of a man with grey hair, wearing a sweater, implicitly Karl Popper, saying, "As paradoxical as it might seem, defending tolerance requires [us] to not tolerate the intolerant."

At the bottom, the comic is cited, "Source: The Open Society and its Enemies, Karl R. Popper."
