15,000 standing in #GarvaghyRoad today.
For decades Orange marches brought violent sectarian rampages into Catholic neighbourhoods, in an apartheid #NorthernIreland .
Under the #peaceprocess marches have been regulated by a #ParadesCommission which kept the peace. Until last week. #Ireland

An appeal to the Court of Appeal is scheduled for Friday, arguing that the #ParadesCommission "materially misdirected itself" on the police assessment of potential disorder and did not given an "accurate representation of the evidence received from the PSNI" in its determination.

Amid all the talk of lawfulness, unlawfulness and the rule of law, it's important to remember that it's peaceful assembly that is protected by human rights law - not merely lawful assembly. #ParadesCommission #Garvaghy #Drumcree #PSNI

#Drumcree: Why did the #ParadesCommission do this?

Surprisingly, the best statement of this key question is on Facebook, as a reply by one Patrick O'Connor to a comment on a report in the Belfast News Letter.

Rreply by Patrick O'Connor to a comment on a link to a report in the Belfast News Letter:

"Whether you support or oppose the parade is somewhat irrelevant. The key issue is what had changed in respect to the March this year when compared to previous years?

What or who persuaded the parades commission that, given the extreme violence associated with that parade in the past, it would be fine and would pass off peacefully this year?

Given the history of it and the fierce opposition it has faced for decades, what happened to the common sense of the parade commissioners?

Everyone with an ounce of sense knew that parade would be met with fierce opposition. Can the residents be blamed for opposing the same march that they oppose every year for the same reasons?

The resident’s opposition merely confirmed what they had repeatedly told the parades commission every year for decades.

Why did the parade commission decide to test the residents resolve on that most contentious parade? Maybe there are new recruits on the parade commission who thought they’d try it and see what happened.

The fact the parade commission ticked all of their procedural boxes doesn’t matter. Their lack of insight and foresight and complete lack of common sense is what caused them to approve the march.

The first judge recognised that when she sought a pause to establish what information and guidance the parades commission had received.

However, Siobhan Keegan and the court of appeal completely ignored the lack of common sense in the parade commission ruling and approved the parade solely because the parade commission had ticked all the necessary boxes, completely ignoring their primary directive concerning the requirements to ensure parades are sensible and orderly.

Nothing had changed for the residents in almost 30-years, they were always going to resist any parade. The fact Siobhan Keegan and the court of appeal refused to recognise that fact is their error. Should the residents just allow that parade to pass because the parades commission and then Siobhan Keegan acted unreasonable if not unlawfully?"

Jaysus, it doesn't take much to kick things off again. Well done to the Parades Commission for one of their best displays of ineptitude and incompetence. #ParadesCommission #NorthernIreland #GarvaghyRoad

A bad decision by the Parades Commission in Northern Ireland.

The right of freedom of assembly does not mean an absolute right to parade anywhere and everywhere.
