What do great artists have in common? Not perfection. They observe closely, make deliberate choices, embrace imperfection, and keep painting until their work communicates.

The magic triad: base, shade and highlight from the SAME colour family. Three pots, one convincing sense of volume. #MiniaturePainting #ColourTheory #PaintingTips

Fix a harsh highlight with a glaze: a heavily thinned coat of the base colour knocks it back without erasing your work. #MiniaturePainting #PaintingTips #Miniatures

Paint sub-assemblies. The rider off the horse, the arm off the torso. Access beats regret every time. #MiniaturePainting #Warhammer #PaintingTips

Matt varnish hides a multitude of sins, and stops your table-time chipping. Always varnish gaming minis. #MiniaturePainting #Wargaming #PaintingTips

Highlight the edges light would hit: top of the shoulder, ridge of the muscle, leading edge of the armour. Light comes from above. #MiniaturePainting #PaintingTips #Miniatures

Metallics settle fast, so stir them, don't just swirl. A dull, chalky metallic is usually just unmixed pigment sitting at the bottom of the pot. #MiniaturePainting #PaintingTips #Warhammer

Point your brush tip AWAY from the detail you're protecting. You'll cut in cleaner every single time. #MiniaturePainting #PaintingTips #Wargaming

Shade the recesses, not the whole model. Targeted washes look intentional. All-over washes look muddy. #MiniaturePainting #Warhammer #PaintingTips

Struggling with neat edges? Load less paint and do more strokes. A flooded brush ruins detail; a starved brush gives you control. #MiniaturePainting #PaintingTips #Miniatures

Undercoat matters more than you think. Black for depth and speed, white or grey for bright colours, zenithal for instant fake lighting. #MiniaturePainting #Warhammer #PaintingTips

Thin your paints. Two thin coats beat one thick coat every time. You keep the detail and the finish stays smooth. Milk consistency is the target. #MiniaturePainting #Warhammer #PaintingTips

Kai Lun Qu doesn’t paint every individual hair to make fur feel believable.

He starts with larger shapes and values, then adds just enough detail to create the illusion of fur.

What’s the hardest part of painting fur for you?

Store paints upside down and give them a shake before a session. The pigment stays mixed and you skip the settled-sludge surprise. #MiniaturePainting #HobbyTips #PaintingTips

Retarder or a drop of flow improver keeps your paint open longer for blending. Cheap bottle, big difference on wet-blend work. #MiniaturePainting #PaintingTips #Blending

Non-metallic metal is just contrast pushed hard: near-black shadows, near-white highlights, a sharp line between. Patience, not magic. #MiniaturePainting #NMM #PaintingTips
