Yes, both iQiyi and Gaga have #PainterOfTheNight. I’ve talked about it before, when I first watched it.

I don’t like the vertical format but I’ve watched a few - including #PainterOfTheNight - because this is what we’ve got. The short episodes are bearable if the app you’re watching on (e.g. Gaga or iQiyi) auto-plays the next one, and they don’t repeat the episode ending. But I miss wide views!

I’ve watched a few decent BL
verticals recently - aside from #PainterOfTheNight, which I’ve already talked about.

There’s #BadKidGoodPartner on Gaga (idol actor and faded child star fake dating).

And on iQiyi, I enjoyed #NoDatingInBoardingSchool (nerd and rebel grow close at cram school).

I’m laughing as I imagine everyone involved in this project - from the actors all the way up to the Korean Film Council - doing their due diligence and reading the manhwa original source material. And their eyes 👀 and minds 🤯 exploding! Because that’s pretty dark intense 🔞 stuff. #PainterOfTheNight

It looks like the subs are better on Gaga than iQiyi, so watch there if you can. #PainterOfTheNight

The outdoor settings are nicely appropriate too, and the costuming feels good quality and right. Even the beards for the older characters! It all comes together as a properly done historical drama. (Not high budget obviously but also not cutting corners and full of discrepancies.) #PainterOfTheNight

I can’t get screenshots on iQiyi but I’d forgotten that #PainterOfTheNight is on Gaga as well.

Interestingly, I saw in the credits that #PainterOfTheNight had funding from the Korean Film Council and the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism. Unexpected (given the subject matter and source material! 😱) but that would explain the budget and higher quality than I thought we’d get with this.

I watched #PainterOfTheNight today and I do think they did a good job with it. Despite being a vertical, it’s well made and well put together, with a decent budget and good acting. The sex scenes are far fewer and much less graphic than in the manhwa but they still managed to produce the right vibe.
