Cornish coast with three moons. Text: Chapter 2. Zeath. Tonight is a night for irreversible decisions. I can taste it in the haunting witches’ songs that echo across Pentire, can smell it in the strange concoction of herbs, thrown over the enormous bonfire. It’s a special combination of myrrh, sage, and amber for the last night of moonlight. Seems a fitting time to reveal things.

Cornish coast with three moons in the sky. Text: Chapter 1, Ainsley. I glare down at my brother’s sea-bloated body. The impatient fool. In the blade-thin light of the moon, Caelan’s fair hair is plastered across his forehead, stiff with seawater. The near-frozen ocean laps at his body as though it’s trying to drag him out toward the slumped form of Karrak Island. Seaweed clings to his legs, tinging the salty air with its earthy scent. “Not dead,” I mutter. “Just cursed.”

The overhead bin is much higher than I remember. Resting my bag on the seat, I catch my breath and allow a few people to squeeze past me. My heart always chooses the wrong time to beat too quickly.
