“Which reminds me, I still need your phone number.”

“Nah, chucked the fucker in a snowbank. I’m free, man.”

“Do you accept carrier pigeons?”

“Couriers, U.S. mail.”

“Letters in bottles?”

“Tossed up on my balcony? Problematic, with the potential glass breakage, but let’s try it.”

Stede laughed. “I’m just going to have to scale it in a proper Romeo situation.”

“As long as we do our best to not have a tragic misunderstanding.” Ed watched the marshmallows dissolving in his cocoa.

“I’m too old for tragic misunderstandings. I’ve outgrown them entirely. But ours, us, it wasn’t…it wasn’t a misunderstanding. I did what I thought I had to do, and I was wrong.”

Last year I wrote Play It Again, Ed, inspired by the song Piano Man. Today I am standing in the train station and someone is playing that song on the piano that inspired the ending of the story.

By the time Ed has gotten dressed, stowed his work safely away and roused the crew to assign their tasks for the day, it’s already time for him to dash off to meet Stede. He’s at a full sprint by the time he reaches the beach proper, too giddy to give a single fuck about how his creaky old knee will feel later, eyes on his prize of a golden head of hair, whose owner is now stepping out of the Revenge’s dinghy. By the time Stede realises how fast and close Ed’s approaching, it’s already too late for him to do anything but let a cry of ‘Edward Teach, don’t you DARE -ooof‘ before Ed makes impact, knocking them both off their feet.
Ed can tell that Stede was probably trying his best to be angry at him (he’d anticipated some level of backlash from Operation Curtains from the very start) but who can be mad when they’re being hugged and kissed this much? Maybe someone who’s just gotten tackled into wet sand perhaps, but Ed’s not going to let that dampen his enthusiasm for their reunion in the slightest. Just you try being miffed now Bonnet - checkmate!

Stede’s smile became less bright, but he was clearly fighting to stay positive. “Mary. I meant to tell you about it yesterday and then got derailed by the other thing. My family is here for a post-Christmas winter break. Mary, Doug, and the kids. And Mary’s friend Evelyn and her service Maine coon, Ned. The whole crowd, really.”

“Oh.”

“I didn’t tell you initially because I wasn’t sure it would matter, and your people are arriving today too, aren’t they?”

“Are they?” Ed was kind of doubtful. He may have given up looking at his phone because he’d been occupied in the best way for the last several days, but several was the key thing here. His vacation was only meant to be three days, and that time was apparently already gone. “Fuck,” he groaned, and then giving into the need to be dramatic about it, he flopped backward onto Stede’s pillows and pulled the wonderfully soft blanket over his head.

Stede sat down on the bed next to him and leaned in. “I can tell them you’re sick.”

“We have a really shitty culture of presenteeism. I’d still need to give my talk.”

“Lost snowshoeing, but we have a search party out.”

“Kidnapped by Mothman,” Ed suggested. “Nah, Izzy would never believe it.”

“You could say you need more time.” Stede offered the suggestion with a tentativeness that made him sound like he was worried about overstepping.
