Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! We are proud to announce that we have officially published our second installment in our Tales From The Baltic article series! Today’s article focuses on the numerous dead zones in the baltic sea, why they are there, how they form, & what their consequences are.

The area of the central Baltic Sea covering (as of 2024) approximately 70,000 square kilometers is considered the largest human-induced oxygen dead zone. The second largest is located in the Gulf of Mexico, yet it is 3 times smaller than the largest one. However, despite this fact, few people know of its existence, and the importance of preventing it from expanding. Here, we will break down the causes behind the formation of oxygen-depleted areas and the consequences that follow.

About half the oxygen you breathe was made by phytoplankton. A year of them from orbit, Sept 2025 to Sept 2026, on a map where every ocean is one body of water. Watch the polar night swallow each pole in turn.

The open data is not the submarine. It is the sound map.

~4,000 Argo floats measure temperature and salinity.

These metrics map how sound travels, where sonar performs best, and where to look.

Open data. Closed models.

🌍 Tiny ocean swirls steer big currents

In a computer model of the Southern Ocean, small swirls drive 18% to 22% of a key current directly and boost bigger eddies for another 24% to 28%. Climate forecasts depend on it.
