After an awful collision at sea with fishing ship #SSVesta on #ThisDayInHistory in 1854, #OceanLiner #SSArctic, an American paddle steamer & #BlueRiband holder, sank 50 miles from Newfoundland. Of 400 aboard, only 64 crew & 24 male passengers escaped after stealing the lifeboats.

#RMSQueenMary greatly shortened #WorldWarII as the most successful troopship in history. Nicknamed the #GreyGhost, the #OceanLiner carried over 800,000 soldiers across 600,000 miles of open ocean unescorted. #QueenMary completed her last trooping voyage on #ThisDayInHistory 1946.

The second-largest #OceanLiner ever built (surpassed only in 2004), #RMSQueenElizabeth was launched in #Scotland on #ThisDayInHistory in 1938. Completed first as a troopship due to #WorldWarII, the #Cunard giant would not have her commercial maiden voyage until October of 1946.

The earlier #SSFrance, the only French #FourStacker #OceanLiner, was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1910. The #CGT (#FrenchLine) ship proved highly popular, and was called the "#Versailles of the Atlantic" in reference to her rich #BaroqueRevival styling. She served until 1936.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1967, the #QueenElizabeth2 (#QE2) of the #Cunard line was launched in the UK. The last large ocean liner built on the #Clyde in #Scotland, she served for decades as the only #OceanLiner in service, until replaced in 2008 by the French-built Cunarder #QM2.

#RMSAdriatic, which launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1906, was the fourth and largest of a quartet of #WhiteStarLine sisters, the #BigFour, but the only one not to be the biggest #OceanLiner in the world at her launch, though she had the first #SwimmingPool & #TurkishBath at sea.

#HMSCaledonia caught fire and sank in 1939 on #ThisDayInHistory. The training ship was acquired from #CunardWhiteStar in April 1937 when #OceanLiner #RMSMajestic was retired from service. Majestic, formerly #SSBismarck (1914), suffered small electrical fires throughout the 1930s.

German #OceanLiner #SSKronprinzessinCecilie, launched in 1906, had been seized by the United States during #WorldWarI and used as troopship #USSMountVernon. She was then mothballed for future use, until finally sent for scrap on #ThisDayInHistory in 1940 as hopelessly outdated.

#SSRotterdam, one of the finest Dutch vessels from #HollandAmericaLine, was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1958. She served until 2000 as both an #OceanLiner and as a #CruiseShip, then returned to her home port in the #Netherlands in 2008 where she became a hotel and museum.

The sidewheel #OceanLiner #SSCentralAmerica sank in a hurricane on #ThisDayInHistory in 1857, about 160 miles east of #CapeHatteras, #NorthCarolina. More than 425 lives were lost, along with 30,000 pounds of #gold from the #California #GoldRush, contributing to the #PanicOf1857.

(1 of 2) The #LaconiaIncident is a US #WarCrime from #WWII on #ThisDayInHistory in 1942. #Nazi submarine #U156 had torpedoed #OceanLiner #RMSLaconia. It and #U506 surfaced to pick up survivors. A US B-24 spotted them and reported that they were delivering civilian survivors......

The lovely #SSParis was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1916, though the #CGT #OceanLiner was not completed until 1921 due to #WorldWarI. Famous for costly mishaps in service, and for her fiery ending and the harm her wreck did to #SSLiberté, she was nonetheless a popular ship.

#RMSArundelCastle, an #OceanLiner of the #UnionCastleLine, was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1919. Originally a #FourStacker, she was rebuilt in 1937 with a raked bow and two funnels, Arundel Castle had a long career on the #SouthAfrica mail run, and was only scrapped in 1959.

Can anyone think of a name? The usual naming convention for the fictional company that owns this ship usually goes for names from epics, if that helps narrow things down for ya.

#SSRex, the greatest #ItalianLine #OceanLiner, was lost on #ThisDayInHistory in 1944. Tucked away during #WorldWarII for safety, the #BlueRiband winner was stripped by Nazis in 1943 so her Italian crew anchored off shore. Allied bombers turned her into a flaming, capsized wreck.
