Brown Sugar," the Stones (number 1 1971-05-29); I remember hearing it in the school cafeteria and everyone sang along with the yeah, yeah, yeah, WOOs. The Stones don't play this much anymore...

"(Just Like) Starting Over," John Lennon (number 1 1980-12-27); after several years away, he released this album and it was like starting over. Then, killed. A senseless loss that still hurts.

"I Can't Get Next to You," the Temptations (number 1, 1969-10-18); they had the pipes and the moves!

"You're So Vain," Carly Simon (number 1 1973-01-06); irony of singing "you probly think this song is about you" to a guy the song is clearly about, but "clouds in my coffee" makes it for me.

"Live to Tell," Madonna (number 1 1986-06-07); so moody and world-weary--you get a sense that this is the real person, not the idol--it's my favorite Madge song.

"Get Down Tonight," KC & the Sunshine Band (number 1 1975-08-30); there was so much getting down in the 70s I'm surprised anyone ever got back up! (To be fair, some didn't.)

"ABC," the Jackson 5 (number1 1970-04-25); I remember the Jacksons hit the airwaves like a category 5 tornado. The sheer energy was stunning! There really hadn't been anything like them before.

"Bette Davis Eyes," Kim Carnes (number1 1981-05-16); and a Phyllis Diller voice, one might argue! Srsly, it was a cool song and I'm surprised Kim didn't go further.

"Crimson and Clover," Tommy James & the Shondells (number1 1969-02-01); I didn't see it as sexual, more about drugs (vaguely). Whatever the meaning, I played the crap out of this 45.

"Nothing Compares 2 U," Sinéad O'Connor (number 1 1990-04-21), this video, the plain close-up, was so powerful... Rest in peace and power, Sinéad...

"A World Without Love," Peter & Gordon (number 1 1964-06-27); a very good documentary on Peter Asher, "Everywhere Man," was released 2025. I saw Peter with Albert Lee (!) in 2023--many stories!
