Something unexpected takes the blue ribbon.

A vertically composed, vintage Americana-style illustration captures a county fair at the instant ordinary celebration turns to astonishment. In the foreground, a young girl in a pale floral dress stares upward with her mouth wide open, clutching what appears to be an ice cream cone topped by a small skull-like form. Behind her towers a woman in a dark patterned dress, one hand raised uncertainly as she gazes toward the same spectacle. Other fairgoers crowd around them, their faces registering shock, confusion, and fear. At left, a uniformed sheriff turns toward the commotion. Enormous prize-winning orange pumpkins decorated with blue ribbons sit beside a striped exhibition tent. Rising behind the pumpkins is the surreal centerpiece: a gigantic pale green creature with a broad, distorted face and massive irregular body looming over the fairgrounds. Ferris wheel spokes, striped carnival tents, flags, ribbons, and clustered spectators fill the background. Muted teal, cream, pumpkin orange, and weathered red tones, combined with visible painterly brushwork, give the scene the appearance of a mid-century magazine illustration transformed into whimsical rural horror.
