If personal success gives Black people greater access, income, and opportunity—but does not give us the power to change the rules, control institutions, or escape anti-Blackness—why do we keep confusing individual achievement with collective power?
Were American schools ever designed for Black children to truly flourish—or have Black children been expected to prove they can succeed within educational systems never built around their humanity, brilliance, and needs?
What happens when Whiteness itself can confer credibility, authority, and institutional power—even when the people granted that power demonstrate less competence than the Black people expected to compensate for their inadequacy?
What if Black children do not need assimilation into White spaces to succeed—but rigorous curriculum, high expectations, adequate resources, and adults who genuinely believe in their intellectual capacity?
I talked to Black parents in Maryland about the #nikolehannahjones piece in the @nytimes.com about where she sent her child to school, and how they made their own decisions. Very moving conversation. We need to have more of them. www.thebanner.com/opinion/colu...
If money can buy access, comfort, and opportunity—but cannot determine the rules of a system structured by White supremacy—when do Black wealth and status become mistaken for actual power?

What happens when we are conditioned to see predominantly Black schools as inherently “bad”—while failing to interrogate the White mediocrity, institutional inadequacy, and systemic failures that may actually be producing the educational harm?
How often are Black women and girls expected to become the “emotional mammies” of schools and workplaces—doing the thinking, fixing, caretaking, and problem-solving for people whose authority exceeds their competence?
If historical and contemporary evidence shows persistent White preference, White advantage, and presumptions of White innocence, what evidence could possibly justify believing America already operates as a race-neutral, colorblind meritocracy?
How much does it matter who is teaching Black children—and whether those teachers are prepared to recognize their brilliance rather than misinterpret their behavior?

How much of what we call a “bad school” is really about the school—and how much is about parental involvement?
